According to analysis by the International Energy Agency, the energy sector contributes approximately 90% of global CO2 emissions and 75% of total greenhouse gas emissions. This is largely because fossil fuels still account for around 80% of global energy production, raising serious concerns for the climate.

With June 5 commemorating World Environment Day, it serves as a reminder to reflect on the significant climate impact and carbon footprint left by our energy grids worldwide. To prevent the global climate disaster this path could lead to, there is an urgent call for a green transition of power grids. In line with this, Denmark is recognised as one of the greenest countries globally, with a strong commitment to sustainability and eco-friendly business ventures. Contributing to this reputation are entrepreneurs such as Anna Riis Hedengaard, who co-founded The 0-Mission in 2022 along with Thomas Granhof.

The 0-Mission is a renewable energy platform that aims to democratise the green energy transition in Denmark. The organisation helps Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) reduce their carbon footprint and climate impact effectively, with a vision to create opportunities for all companies that want to make a difference.

The green energy transition

The Paris Agreement brought an international consensus on maintaining global warming levels below 1.5 degrees, and to achieve this goal, energy sector emissions need to be cut in half by 2030 and brought to a net zero by 2050. Denmark has incorporated this goal into its national policies, and is working towards achieving a completely fossil-fuel free, i.e., green energy system by 2050. This transition at a large scale requires efforts from government bodies as well as businesses of all sizes who have sizeable energy consumptions.

When Anna was previously working with an energy company, she noticed that while many businesses had the intention to contribute to this green energy transition, only the bigger clients were actually able to do so. The main reasons for this included green energy products being either too expensive or inflexible. Anna found that this was holding back the larger environmental cause. She believed strongly that all companies deserve to reduce their climate impact and contribute to the green energy transition

Turning this market gap into an opportunity, she ventured into the environmental services business and co-founded The 0-Mission.

What does The 0-Mission do?

The 0-Mission is a consumer-friendly company which prioritises environmental conservation in Denmark and their customers’ experience simultaneously. They work with a subscription-based solar park model.

The company offers services in the form of partnerships that clients can enter with them, with the purpose of reducing their climate impact. These partnerships are agreements where The 0-Mission tracks their client’s energy consumption, and then matches their consumption in the form of contributions to a Denmark-based private-funded solar park. Effectively, this means that companies get to contribute to the green energy transition in Denmark proportionally based on their energy consumption.

Within just above three years of its founding, the company is already profitable and well-known in the country. They are also seen as making a tangible contribution to the green energy transition. The 0-Mission made news in 2024 after securing a pre-seed funding of €130,000 from a group of business angels, including those from Angella Invest, to expand its model.

The company’s focus is on democratising contributions to the green energy transition. Among its high-profile clients is Deloitte Denmark, recognised as a leading and valuable commercial services brand in the country, which subscribes to renewable solar energy.

  • The 0-Mission supports Deloitte by matching its energy consumption with contributions to the Vandel Solar Park – a privately financed solar park in Denmark which is managed by The 0-Mission.
  • Through this partnership, Deloitte was able to offset approximately 4 GWh of electricity consumption in 2023. This is equivalent to the annual CO2 emissions of around 280 average global citizens, amounting to nearly 1,700 tonnes.
  • In 2025, Deloitte’s subscription is projected to offset approximately 1931 tons of CO2 emissions according to The 0-Mission. This enables Deloitte’s WorldClimate ambition and its commitment to a science-based net-zero future.

What is their USP?

The 0-Mission’s Unique Selling Point (USP) is the flexibility of its agreements, tailored to clients’ actual energy consumption and the fluctuating price of electricity.

  • Unlike traditional Power Purchase Agreements (PPAs), which often bind customers to fixed rates for up to ten years, The 0-Mission offers contracts limited to one year, providing clients with greater flexibility and adaptability.
  • Most green energy purchases from utility providers go towards existing government-funded projects, while the 0-Mission directs payments towards privately funded solar parks, ensuring that their contributions help build new renewable infrastructure.
  • Additionally, the company provides clients with accessible reporting tools and educational resources covering energy use, carbon offsetting, and more. These include digital content, updates via social media, and even opportunities to visit the solar parks – offering clients a tangible connection to the energy transition they are supporting.

About Anna Riis Hedegaard

Anna has more than 10 years of experience in the climate and energy field from Christiansborg (the Danish Parliament), the development industry, and climate diplomacy. Before starting The 0-Mission, she has experience working with Geelmuyden Kiese, &Tell, and Antler.

As CEO of The 0-Mission, Anna is in charge of the company’s development and conceptual basis. She says that it is her mission to make fossil energy redundant, and has time and again expressed her belief in shared responsibility, transparency and a community-driven approach to change.

Conclusion

The 0-Mission stands out in the green energy and carbon offset market by balancing a strong focus on customer experience with measurable environmental impact. The company and its founders are working towards the broader goal of a fossil-free energy system and reduced climate impact globally, making them an inspiration to many innovators seeking to create impact.
