Hong Kong Exchanges and Clearing Limited (HKEX) has approved a three-year contract extension for Chief Executive Officer Bonnie Chan Yi-ting, anchoring executive leadership as Asia’s premier exchange operator capitalises on a sharp recovery in cross-border listings and capital market activity.
A Strategic Turnaround Mandate
Since taking charge as HKEX’s first female Chief Executive Officer in March 2024, Chan has spearheaded a systemic modernization of Hong Kong’s financial market infrastructure. Under her leadership, the bourse relaxed listing regulations to attract dual-class share structures and high-growth artificial intelligence and advanced technology firms.
The strategic pivot has delivered substantial commercial momentum:
- Market Recovery: Reclaimed a top-tier global position for primary equity fundraising following a multi-year slump.
- Shareholder Returns: HKEX equity has gained approximately 69% during her tenure, outperforming the benchmark Hang Seng Index’s 53% return.
- Listing Evolution: Enhanced market microstructure, streamlined IPO approval timelines, and expanded dual-currency trade channels between mainland China and global institutional investors.
Board Endorsement
The board of directors reappointed Chan for a second three-year term running from 1 March 2027 through 28 February 2030, subject to regulatory approval from the Securities and Futures Commission (SFC).
“Since becoming CEO in early 2024, Bonnie has led HKEX Group with vision, purpose and distinction,” stated HKEX Chairman Carlson Tong. “Her commitment to strengthening Hong Kong’s role as a leading international financial centre, together with her vision for building a vibrant multi-asset ecosystem that connects capital and opportunities between China and the world, has helped position HKEX for long-term growth and success.”
A solicitor by background, Chan holds a Bachelor of Laws from the University of Hong Kong and a Master of Laws from Harvard Law School. She previously led the legal function for Morgan Stanley’s Asia capital markets business and later became a partner at Davis Polk & Wardwell. She first joined HKEX in 2007 as Head of IPO Transactions before returning to the exchange in 2020 as Head of Listing. Her renewed tenure provides continuity as HKEX advances its strategy to build a multi-asset ecosystem connecting China with global markets, while continuing to strengthen its listing, trading and derivatives businesses.
