The Public Service Commission has confirmed the official appointment of Mrs. Sandradee Fonua Fifita of Fangaloto, Tongatapu, as the incoming Chief Executive Officer for the Ministry of Tourism.

The state employment body announced that Fifita will secure the leadership position for a fixed four-year term, which becomes effective on 15 June 2026. Her selection follows an open, competitive recruitment drive organised by the commission, with the final decision subsequently endorsed by both the Minister for Tourism and the Cabinet. Notably, Fifita represents the fifth female leader chosen to serve among the 18 active chief executive positions present across the current Tongan government.

The incoming executive possesses more than 30 years of public sector management experience. Her professional background spans senior roles in trade, commerce, consumer affairs and tourism, alongside academic qualifications completed at Wellington Polytechnic in New Zealand and the University of the South Pacific. Over her career, she has managed national policy creation, department strengthening and international engagement tasks on behalf of the Kingdom of Tonga.

Following the announcement, the board and management of the Tonga Tourism Authority offered their formal congratulations to the new chief executive. The statutory authority stated that her background and strategic vision will continue to support the domestic travel industry and its ongoing economic contribution to the country.

The authority also noted that broad cooperation remains vital to creating a stable travel sector. This infrastructure requires active participation across separate industries, state ministries, private companies, cultural groups and local neighborhoods. Currently, the tourist trade is one of the primary commercial sectors for Tonga, linking local residents, traditional heritage, hospitality and the environment with global travel markets.

Both the Public Service Commission and the Tonga Tourism Authority explicitly expressed their gratitude to the outgoing chief executive officer, Mr. Viliami Takau, for his past administrative service and institutional contributions, wishing him success in his upcoming professional paths.

Moving forward, the national tourism body confirmed it intends to maintain close operational links with Fifita and the wider ministry team to ensure the steady expansion of the holiday industry for the collective economic welfare of all Tongan citizens.
