Her Royal Highness The Princess Royal made a special visit to Cunard’s newest ship, Queen Anne, during its recent stop in Liverpool on 27th May, highlighting the deep historical connection between the city and the iconic cruise line.

The visit marked a significant occasion for Cunard, whose roots trace back 185 years to Liverpool, the city where the company launched its first Transatlantic voyage in May 1840. For more than a century, Liverpool served as Cunard’s global headquarters, and remains central to the company’s identity and legacy.

Last year, in a landmark event at the city’s waterfront, Liverpool was officially named the Godparent of Queen Anne, the first time a city has ever been granted such a title, further underscoring the enduring relationship between Cunard and the Mersey.

During her time on board, Her Royal Highness met with crew, dignitaries, and local representatives in the elegant Queens Room to honour the long-standing ties between the cruise line and its spiritual home. She also engaged with members of Cunard’s Women Officers Network, a collective representing women across the maritime and hospitality sectors.

Katie McAlister, President of Cunard, reflected on the occasion, stating: “While this was intended to be a moment of celebration for Cunard’s 185th anniversary, instead it’s a now a moment of solidarity with the city and our thoughts are with all those affected, and with the entire community at this time.

“Liverpool is not just where Cunard was founded, it’s where our story began. This great city, with its proud maritime history and strong sense of identity, has shaped Cunard from the very beginning. The docks, the river, and the people of Liverpool are all part of our heritage and remain central to who we are today.

“The bond between Cunard and Liverpool has grown over generations. It is built on shared values, resilience, pride, and a deep respect for tradition, and it continues to mean a great deal to us. We feel a strong connection to this city and are always proud to return.”

The visit also coincided with the Sea of Glamour exhibition, curated by Mary McCartney. Showcasing 184 images, the exhibit pays tribute to Cunard’s transatlantic legacy, capturing moments from both the past and present and celebrating the visual history of ocean travel.
