The hospitality subsidiary of Transnational Corporation Plc, Transcorp Hotels Plc, has celebrated the graduation of the 16th group of participants from its Business Empowerment Programme for Women. Held in Abuja, Nigeria, the event marks the latest milestone for the firm’s primary corporate social responsibility initiative. The scheme aims to improve community economic inclusion by offering practical vocational training and enterprise skills.
Launched in 2016 alongside joint partner ACE Charity, the six-month development course has provided resources and practical instruction to 64 young women. The structured curriculum delivers hands-on tailoring training alongside essential modules covering financial management, marketing, business operations and customer service. Upon finishing the course, each graduate receives a donation of a sewing machine and necessary equipment to establish their own small businesses.
The programme also incorporates specific environmental targets to encourage circular fashion models. Rather than sourcing new textiles, the training workshops repurpose pre-used hotel bedding that would otherwise be discarded as waste. This practice allows the hospitality brand to cut down its environmental footprint while teaching students sustainable business habits.
The company focuses on using its platform to create structural changes within the local economy. Speaking on the impact of the initiative, Uzoamaka Oshogwe, MD/CEO of Transcorp Hotels Plc, said: “We believe hospitality goes beyond the experiences we create within our hotels. Through this programme, we are investing in young women, supporting entrepreneurship, creating social, economic, and promoting sustainability. Company directors noted that the training model helps build a corporate framework where business outcomes are balanced alongside environmental and community achievements. The hospitality brand plans to continue its vocational investment strategy across the region.
