In a milestone moment for British intelligence, Blaise Metreweli has been named the new chief of the Secret Intelligence Service (MI6), making history as the first woman to lead the agency since its establishment in 1909.

Currently serving as Director General of MI6’s Q section – head of the crucial technology and innovation division, Metreweli will step into the role later this year, succeeding Sir Richard Moore as the 18th chief of MI6. The 47-year-old intelligence veteran joined the service in 1999 and has built a distinguished career across key international and domestic security roles.

Her appointment comes at a time when intelligence work is more critical than ever, according to Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer, who called the move “historic” and stated “The historic appointment of Blaise Metreweli comes at a time when the work of our intelligence services has never been more vital. The United Kingdom is facing threats on an unprecedented scale, be it aggressors who send their spy ships to our waters or hackers whose sophisticated cyber-plots seek to disrupt our public services.”

Blaise Metreweli also expressed her commitment by stating “I am proud and honoured to be asked to lead my service. MI6 plays a vital role – with MI5 and GCHQ – in keeping the British people safe and promoting UK interests overseas. I look forward to continuing that work alongside the brave officers and agents of MI6 and our many international partners.”

As head of MI6’s tech and innovation division, Metreweli has been responsible for maintaining the security of covert operatives and staying ahead of threats.

Metreweli’s background includes a degree in anthropology from the University of Cambridge, senior leadership roles in MI5, and extensive fieldwork across the Middle East and Europe.

As she prepares to lead MI6 into a new era, Metreweli’s appointment not only marks a significant step forward for representation but also signals a continued emphasis on adapting to complex, tech-driven global threats.
