The Secretary of State for Culture, Media and Sport has authorised a nine-month extension for Helen Birchenough in her role as the South West Area Chair for Arts Council England. This decision ensures that Birchenough will remain in her post from 5 December 2026 until 4 September 2027. The announcement was published on 8 May 2026 by the Department for Culture, Media and Sport and The Rt Hon Lisa Nandy MP.

Birchenough has been a prominent figure in the education and arts sectors of Wiltshire for two decades. Her career includes serving as the Chair for the Salisbury Playhouse and the Salisbury International Arts Festival. She is particularly noted for managing the merger of these organisations with the Salisbury Arts Centre to create Wiltshire Creative. She continues to serve as a Trustee for Wiltshire Creative and is a member of the Arts Advisory Panel for Salisbury Cathedral.

In the education sector, Birchenough spent five years as the Chair of Wiltshire College where she managed a significant period of institutional change. She also led the education panel at the Wiltshire Community Foundation. This work involved overseeing grants and bursaries for young people who required financial assistance to access university or educational resources. Birchenough also holds the title of Deputy Lieutenant in Wiltshire.

The position of South West Area Chair carries an annual remuneration of £7,525. Within Arts Council England, Birchenough also sits on the Remuneration Committee as well as the Performance and Audit Committee. This extension was carried out according to the Governance Code on Public Appointments and remains regulated by the Commissioner for Public Appointments.

As part of the official appointment process, individuals must declare any major political activity from the previous five years. This includes standing for election, making financial donations, or public speaking for a political cause. Helen Birchenough has confirmed that she has no such political activity to declare. This transparency is a standard requirement for regulated public roles in the United Kingdom.
