Today, the UAE proudly celebrates Emirati Women’s Day, a significant occasion dedicated to honouring the remarkable achievements and contributions of women across the nation. From the boardroom to the arts, and from sports to scientific research, Emirati women are leaving an indelible mark on every sector of society.

In a region where gender balance has often lagged, the UAE stands out as a leader. According to the United Nations Development Program (UNDP), the UAE is at the forefront of gender equality in the Arab world. Women occupy 30 percent of the UAE Cabinet seats, a testament to the nation’s commitment to female representation in governance. Moreover, the UAE excels globally in literacy and pay equity for women, as reported by the World Economic Forum in 2018. A striking 77 percent of Emirati women continue their education beyond secondary school, and women make up 70 percent of university graduates in the UAE.

Emirati women are making significant strides in diverse fields including finance, banking, aviation, oil and gas, and energy. Notably, 75 percent of Emirati students in government higher education institutions are women, and women now hold over 550 positions within Emirates Global Aluminium (EGA). Since Emirati Women’s Day 2023, EGA has welcomed more than 110 new female employees, including 67 UAE Nationals. The company aims to increase female representation in supervisory roles to 25 percent by 2025 and in all positions to 15 percent by 2026.

Established in 2015 by Sheikha Fatima bint Mubarak, the Mother of the Nation, Emirati Women’s Day commemorates the significant contributions of Emirati women. The date, August 28, is particularly meaningful as it marks the founding of the UAE’s General Women’s Union in 1975, an institution pivotal in advocating for women’s rights and empowerment.

This year’s Emirati Women’s Day will spotlight the ongoing achievements of Emirati women across various fields. While the theme for 2024 is yet to be announced, it is expected to highlight continued progress and success. The day serves multiple purposes: recognising the invaluable contributions of Emirati women, inspiring young women to pursue their dreams, promoting gender equality, and celebrating the cultural heritage of Emirati women.

Emirati Women’s Day is more than a celebration; it is a platform to showcase the extraordinary accomplishments of women and to inspire future generations. Through events and initiatives, the UAE underscores its dedication to gender equality and women’s empowerment. By celebrating these achievements, the country aims to motivate more women to actively contribute to the nation’s prosperity and development.

In reflecting on Emirati Women’s Day, it is clear that the UAE is not only recognising the past and present successes of its women but is also committed to fostering an environment where future generations of Emirati women can thrive and lead.
