Former Liverpool captain Niamh Fahey has rejoined the club in a new off-field role as technical co-ordinator, marking her return just months after retiring from an illustrious playing career.

The 37-year-old, who hung up her boots at the end of last season, spent five years as captain and made 125 appearances for the Reds, helping the team win the FA Women’s Championship title in 2022. Her extensive international career included 115 caps for the Republic of Ireland, culminating in an appearance at the FIFA Women’s World Cup in Australia last year.

Fahey’s decorated playing journey also featured successful spells with Arsenal, Chelsea and Bordeaux, where she collected multiple Women’s Super League titles and five Women’s FA Cups.

Now back at Liverpool, Fahey will take on a crucial position shaping the future direction of the women’s programme. As technical co-ordinator, she will support key areas including player development, recruitment, long-term planning and building a stronger pathway from the club’s Pro Game Academy to the senior team.

Liverpool FC’s chief financial officer and LFC Women board member Jenny Beacham said: “This is a key appointment for our women’s programme and I’m absolutely delighted that we have someone with Niamh’s knowledge, experience and leadership back in the building.

“She will be a significant support to our managing director Andy O’Boyle as we continue growing and executing a long-term football strategy for our women’s team.”

Fahey returned to the AXA Melwood Training Centre last month and has already begun work in her new capacity.

Alongside her achievements on the pitch, she has also invested in her education, earning a master’s degree in business administration (MBA) from Liverpool John Moores University in July and completing her UEFA B coaching licence through the PFA. She also holds a master’s in pharmacology.

Managing director Andy O’Boyle added:“I’m thrilled that Niamh agreed to take on what will be an extremely important position within our women’s staff, elevating our sporting standards and contributing to the long-term development of the women’s programme.”

“She will be a highly visible presence and involved in collaboration across our wider FSG football executive, maintaining alignment with the club’s broader identity, ensuring shared values, philosophy and high-performance levels.”

“I know our fans will join me in giving her a warm welcome back to the club.”
