Fenway Sports Group (FSG) has acquired a franchise in WTGL, the newly formed women’s professional golf league launched in partnership with the Ladies Professional Golf Association (LPGA) and TMRW Sports. The team will compete under the Boston Common Golf name, representing Boston and New England as the fifth confirmed franchise for the upcoming inaugural campaign.

WTGL will launch this autumn at SoFi Center in Palm Beach Gardens, Florida. The competition utilises a team match-play structure featuring many of the top LPGA Tour competitors. Currently, 14 players have been confirmed for the league, including six of the top 13 world-ranked golfers, who hold a combined total of 95 LPGA Tour tournament victories. Further player selections are expected before play begins.

The purchase represents FSG’s first team ownership stake within women’s professional golf. It follows the firm’s commercial relationship with the LPGA, which began in 2023 when Fenway Sports Management partnered with the tour to assist with marketing and sponsorship growth. FSG was also among the original six team owners in TGL presented by SoFi and served as an early investor in parent organisation TMRW Sports.

“At FSG, we’ve always believed in investing early in ideas with the potential to grow and evolve the sports landscape,” said Linda Henry, FSG partner and CEO of Boston Globe Media. “Our investment in TMRW Sports and partnership with the LPGA have only reinforced our confidence in the future of women’s golf. WTGL is a natural next step, and we’re proud to bring Boston Common Golf to the league and another world-class team to New England fans.”

Boston Common Golf President and CEO Mark Lev noted that the team will expand its community initiative, Common Ground, which focuses on providing golf access to women and girls across New England. “Boston Common Golf’s success off the course is measured in the strength of our corporate partnerships, the way fans across New England and beyond have embraced this team and its brand, and community programming that is bringing more young people into the game,” said Boston Common Golf President and CEO Mark Lev. “Those relationships with our partners, our fans, and our communities give this new team a strong foundation, and we look forward to building on that with our WTGL team.”

The team joins four previously announced WTGL franchises: Atlanta Drive Golf Club, owned by Arthur M. Blank and AMB Sports and Entertainment; Los Angeles Golf Club, owned by Alexis Ohanian; New York Golf Club, owned by Steve Cohen and Cohen Private Ventures; and Motor City Golf Club, owned by Michael Hamp, Peter Hamp and Kevin Kelleher.

“Fenway Sports Group has been a TMRW Sports partner from the beginning and understands what it takes to build an enduring team brand in one of the world’s most passionate sports markets,” said Mike McCarley, founder and CEO of TMRW Sports. “Boston Common Golf brings an established identity, a passionate fan base and an ownership group with a record of growing iconic sports properties. Adding FSG and Boston Common Golf strengthens WTGL as we build a premier platform for women’s team golf in partnership with the LPGA.”

Full roster details and launch schedules for Boston Common Golf will be released over the coming weeks.
