Kakao becomes first South Korean company to join global open-source AI Alliance

Kakao announced on Friday its membership in a global consortium dedicated to promoting open-source AI research and development. This milestone marks Kakao as the first Korean corporate member of the initiative, signaling the company’s commitment to driving forward AI technology on a global scale.

Led by industry giants IBM and Meta, the AI Alliance boasts a diverse membership comprising leading tech companies, startups, public institutes, and universities. Founded in December 2023, the consortium has rapidly grown to include approximately 100 members, united in their mission to accelerate open innovation across the AI technology landscape.

For Kakao, joining the AI Alliance represents a strategic move aimed at fostering the growth of a robust AI ecosystem in Korea that aligns with international standards. By collaborating with like-minded organizations within the consortium, Kakao seeks to contribute to the advancement of foundational capabilities, safety, security, and trust in AI technologies.

Kim Kyung-hoon, head of Kakao’s AI safety division, expressed the company’s commitment to the goals of the AI Alliance, stating, “We will cooperate with the AI Alliance to create a safe and credible open-source AI ecosystem that meets global standards.” This statement underscores Kakao’s dedication to ensuring the responsible and ethical development of AI technologies, in line with the principles of transparency and accountability.
