Finland has announced a EUR 3 million commitment to support UN Women’s Ukraine Country Programme over the 2026–2028 period, as part of its ongoing support for gender equality and Ukraine’s long-term recovery.

The funding is intended to back initiatives that advance the rights of women and girls while contributing to reconstruction efforts in a country still affected by war. Finnish officials said the contribution also aligns with Ukraine’s efforts to move closer to the European Union, where gender equality is a core principle.

Minister for Foreign Trade and Development Ville Tavio said the funding reflects Finland’s wider priorities in crisis and recovery settings.
“Supporting UN Women in Ukraine is an investment in the country’s resilience and its gender equality efforts. Through this funding, we aim to promote the rights and agency of women and girls living in crisis-affected areas,” he said.

UN Women works alongside Ukrainian authorities, civil society organisations and private sector partners to advance equality and participation. Finland’s support aims to improve access to services and decision-making for women and girls, while helping lay the groundwork for a more inclusive and sustainable future.

The announcement also highlights the role Ukrainian women have played during the war, particularly in economic activity. Many have launched start-ups, introduced new services and contributed to strengthening local economic resilience despite difficult conditions.

Through its partnership with UN Women, Finland said it intends to support women’s participation in the private sector, encourage innovation and digitalisation, and ensure women are able to influence reconstruction policies and solutions.

A central element of Finland’s approach is the inclusion of women and girls with disabilities, ensuring that recovery efforts are accessible and equitable.

Finland is currently UN Women’s second-largest donor globally. Officials said the additional funding for Ukraine further reinforces Finland’s position as a consistent supporter of gender equality at international level.
