Amazon has unveiled plans to invest £40 billion in the UK over the next three years, aiming to boost its operations and create thousands of new jobs across the country. This significant investment will see the construction of four new fulfilment centres and numerous delivery stations, alongside upgrades to its existing network of more than 100 operational buildings nationwide.

The expansion is expected to generate thousands of permanent, full-time roles, predominantly outside London and the South East. This includes 2,000 jobs at the previously announced state-of-the-art fulfilment centre in Hull and another 2,000 at a new facility in Northampton, with additional positions at new sites in the East Midlands and delivery stations across the UK. Amazon already employs over 75,000 people in the country, making it one of the top private sector employers. The investment is expected to contribute up to £38 billion to the UK’s GDP.

Along with the new fulfilment centres, the investment package includes the opening of two new buildings at Amazon’s corporate headquarters in East London. The company also plans to enhance its transportation infrastructure to improve delivery speed and efficiency, supporting both customers and thousands of small and medium-sized UK businesses that sell via Amazon’s platform.

Amazon’s commitment extends beyond logistics. The company is investing in its workforce through competitive pay, benefits, and training programmes. It offers over 60 different roles at new sites, ranging from robotics technicians to safety experts and mechatronic engineers. The company’s Career Choice programme, which covers up to £8,000 in training costs for employees, has already benefited more than 23,000 participants. Amazon’s full-time roles offer starting salaries of at least £28,000 (£30,000 in London), alongside training and benefits.

The investment also includes a major redevelopment of the historic Bray Film Studios in Berkshire, which Amazon acquired in 2024. This move underlines Amazon’s ongoing support for the UK’s creative industries, alongside multimillion-pound skills and training initiatives and original TV and film productions.

Part of the £40 billion investment covers £8 billion previously announced for building and maintaining data centres in the UK between 2024 and 2028. This will help meet the rising demand for cloud and AI services, supporting the UK government’s ambition to increase AI compute capacity and transform the digital economy.

Amazon CEO Andy Jassy said: “Amazon has been proud to serve our customers in the UK for the past 27 years. Thanks to their support, we’ve grown to be part of over 100 communities nationwide, from developing drone technology in Darlington to producing world-class entertainment at our studios in Bray.

“We now employ over 75,000 people and have become one of the UK’s largest private sector employers and taxpayers. When Amazon invests, it’s not only in London and the South East – we’re bringing innovation and job creation to communities throughout England, Wales, Scotland, and Northern Ireland, strengthening the UK’s economy and delivering better experiences for customers wherever they live.”

Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer welcomed the announcement, saying: “Amazon’s £40 billion investment adds another major win to Britain’s basket and is a massive vote of confidence in the UK as the best place to do business. It means thousands of new jobs—real opportunities for people in every corner of the country to build careers, learn new skills, and support their families. Whether it’s cutting-edge AI or same-day delivery, this deal shows that our Plan for Change is working—bringing in investment, driving growth, and putting more money in people’s pockets.”

This expansion also includes 1,000 new apprenticeships, building on the 5,300 offered since 2013. The company is partnering with educational institutions and government initiatives to train UK workers in essential AI skills, aiming to prepare the workforce for future demands.

In addition to job creation and infrastructure, Amazon is pushing forward with sustainability efforts. Earlier this year, Amazon placed the UK’s largest order for electric trucks and invested in renewable energy projects—together expected to power hundreds of thousands of homes and deliver over 300 million packages annually with zero emissions.

Amazon’s investment reflects a strong vote of confidence in the UK economy and its long-term commitment to supporting communities, innovation, and growth across the nation.
