Liverpool Health Partners has officially confirmed the appointment of Professor Louise Kenny as its first Chief Executive Officer. The announcement was made on 29 April 2026. This newly created position is central to a wider refresh of the organisation’s governance structure. It aims to support the next stage of the partnership’s growth as an integrated Academic Health Science Partnership.
The partnership brings together the University of Liverpool and the NHS University Hospitals of Liverpool Group alongside various academic and civic organisations. By appointing a dedicated chief executive, the group intends to create a more coordinated system for research and clinical delivery. This model provides a single point of access for national funders and industry leaders who want to collaborate with the Liverpool City Region.
Professor Kenny is well known as a clinical scientist and has a significant background in women’s health research. She previously served as the Executive Pro Vice Chancellor for the Faculty of Health and Life Sciences at the University of Liverpool. Additionally, she holds a leadership position within the Northern Health Science Alliance where she works on national research and health inequality issues.
Professor Kenny said: “I am delighted to take on this role at such an important time for Liverpool. We are entering a period of significant opportunity, and through Liverpool Health Partners we have the platform to shape a more connected and ambitious system. By bringing together our strengths across research, clinical care and innovation, we can position the region to deliver at scale for our communities and for upcoming national opportunities.”
The appointment comes as the region seeks to play a larger role in the UK’s health research infrastructure. The new leadership will focus on place-based excellence by working with the Liverpool City Region Combined Authority. This approach ensures that scientific innovation remains linked to local economic needs and community health priorities.
Professor Tim Jones, Chair of Liverpool Health Partners, said: “Louise brings national credibility and a wealth of experience across research, clinical leadership and system development. Her appointment strengthens our ability to operate with confidence at the highest level and to play a leading role in shaping the future of health research and innovation.”
James Sumner, Chief Executive of NHS University Hospitals of Liverpool Group, said: “This is an important step forward. Strengthening alignment between NHS priorities, our communities and industry partners will be critical, and Louise brings the leadership to connect these effectively and translate them into real improvements in care.”
