Women entrepreneurs in Sokoto State, Nigeria are set to benefit from a newly launched N10 million financial support initiative aimed at promoting economic empowerment at the grassroots level.
The programme, introduced by Honourable Abdulsamad Dasuki, who represents the Tambuwal-Kebbe Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives, was officially launched over the weekend in Sokoto. It targets women already involved in small-scale businesses, with at least 400 beneficiaries expected in the first round of disbursements.
The initiative was launched on behalf of the MP by his wife, Hajiya Jamila Wada Dasuki, who addressed attendees at the event. She explained that the grant scheme forms part of Hon. Dasuki’s wider ambition to support local businesses, alleviate poverty, and strengthen women’s economic independence in the region.
Women selected from different wards across Tambuwal and Kebbe local government areas are among those who will receive support. Many of them are already active in trades such as tailoring, spice processing, goat rearing, and small-scale farming.
Speaking at the launch, Hajiya Jamila highlighted the programme as a thoughtful investment in enterprises run by women, stressing their crucial contribution to the growth and well-being of local communities.
“This is not just financial assistance, it’s a recognition of the important role women play in sustaining our communities. These women are already entrepreneurs. Supporting them will trigger a ripple effect that benefits entire households and communities” she said
She acknowledged that the initial funding reflects current financial limitations but described it as the first step in a wider ambition to extend support to more rural women, particularly in underserved districts like Romon Sarki and Sanyinna.
“Charity begins at home. This is just the start, we are committed to expanding this support to even more underserved areas,” she added.
She also urged recipients to make productive use of the funds, with a view to driving long-term benefits such as enterprise growth, job creation, and improved household income. She said, “We hope to return in the near future and see thriving businesses and improved livelihoods. From here, we aim to grow stronger,” she concluded.
This initiative is an impactful move towards enhancing economic opportunities for women in the constituency launched at the right time.
