Hindustan Zinc Limited (HZL), a leading name in zinc production in India, has introduced a groundbreaking new product: EcoZen, which stands as Asia’s pioneering low-carbon zinc brand. This innovative zinc aims to cater to the rising demand for sustainable and eco-conscious materials, particularly in the automotive industry.

EcoZen is distinct for its production process, which harnesses renewable energy sources, resulting in a carbon footprint that is approximately 75% lower than the global average. For every tonne of EcoZen produced, the carbon emissions are kept below one tonne, setting a new standard for environmentally friendly zinc.

The launch of EcoZen is in line with Hindustan Zinc’s broader ambition to achieve net-zero emissions by 2050. This low-carbon zinc has been developed to meet the needs of car manufacturers who are increasingly focusing on reducing their environmental footprint. When used in the galvanisation process of one tonne of steel, EcoZen is projected to prevent around 400 kilograms of carbon emissions, presenting a significant benefit for the automotive sector.

With Hindustan Zinc commanding a substantial 75% of the zinc market share in India, the introduction of EcoZen is expected to enhance its influence within the automotive industry, where zinc plays a crucial role in protecting steel from corrosion. Given that the zinc market for automotive applications mirrors steel’s market share at around 30%, EcoZen is poised to be a valuable asset for car manufacturers striving to diminish their environmental impact.

In addition to its focus on zinc, Hindustan Zinc is also broadening its horizons by exploring new opportunities in critical mineral exploration through a new subsidiary, in collaboration with the Indian government. This move aims to tap into various sectors including steel, infrastructure, automotive, renewable energy, electronics, and electric mobility.

Looking ahead, Hindustan Zinc plans to increase its use of renewable energy in zinc production, targeting a contribution of 30-35% by next year. This commitment underscores the company’s dedication to sustainable practices and its role in advancing green technologies across multiple industries.
