Nasdaq-listed Zentalis Pharmaceuticals has announced two major appointments to its leadership team as it prepares for the potential market launch of its novel cancer treatment. Shannon Campbell joins the Board of Directors, whilst Sarah Kelly takes on the role of Senior Vice President of Commercial Strategy. The changes come as the San Diego-based clinical oncology firm moves forward with late-stage trials for azenosertib, an investigational WEE1 inhibitor targeting Cyclin E1-positive platinum-resistant ovarian cancer.
The appointments aim to build the operational and market readiness required for the drug’s potential commercialisation. Ms Campbell possesses more than 30 years of biopharmaceutical experience. She recently served as Executive Vice President and Chief Commercial Officer at Merus, where she oversaw the firm’s transition into a commercial-stage business. Her career also features prominent leadership positions at Novartis Pharmaceuticals and Bayer Healthcare Pharmaceuticals. She currently sits on the board of Black Diamond Therapeutics and acts as an advisory board member for Verix.
“Shannon Campbell brings deep experience helping oncology companies successfully navigate the transition from clinical to commercial-stage,” said Julie Eastland, Chief Executive Officer of Zentalis. “Shannon’s commercial scale-up leadership will help us achieve our vision as we continue advancing azenosertib through late-stage development for patients with Cyclin E1-positive platinum-resistant ovarian cancer (PROC). Simultaneously, the appointment of Sarah Kelly brings a broad set of experience in building launch readiness for both companion diagnostics and therapeutics. Together, these roles provide the strategic, operational, and commercial foundation needed to support launch readiness and long-term growth.”
Working alongside Ms Campbell, Sarah Kelly will spearhead launch preparations. Throughout a 30-year career in business development and commercial operations, Ms Kelly has held senior roles at Amgen, Turning Point, Spectrum and Agilent. Her background includes preparing commercial platforms for therapeutic and companion diagnostic rollouts.
“I am excited to join Zentalis’ Board at an important time for the Company as it prepares to bring a potential first-in-class therapy to market for patients with platinum-resistant ovarian cancer, a population with significant unmet need,” said Ms Campbell. “I look forward to working with the Zentalis Board and the leadership team to help build the strategic and commercial infrastructure needed to ultimately bring this important potential new treatment option to the community.”
Zentalis is currently driving azenosertib through a late-stage registrational development scheme. The company anticipates a topline data readout from its DENALI Phase 2 trial by the end of 2026, which could pave the way for an accelerated approval pathway with the US FDA. Furthermore, the firm has initiated patient dosing in its ASPENOVA Phase 3 confirmatory trial. This trial seeks to convert potential accelerated approvals into full regulatory clearances whilst supporting registrations outside the United States.
