In an attempt to establish Kenya as an AI superpower, a new initiative by Sama has developed an AI training program. Sama, a leader in responsible enterprise AI solutions, has introduced a first-of-its-kind scalable training solution designed to cut down AI project ramp times, improve data annotation accuracy, and build a diverse, skilled workforce, reinforcing Kenya’s potential in the AI revolution.

Duncan Curtis, Senior Vice President of AI Products and Technology at Sama, explains, “Basic data annotation training encourages rote memorization, but at Sama, we focus on project-specific training to improve quality and reduce rework. Our new platform is designed to be more scalable and adaptable, allowing annotators to learn at their own pace and handle complex tasks such as automotive and Generative AI data annotation.”

Maxwell Okello, CEO of the American Chamber of Commerce (AmCham) Kenya, underlines the importance of this initiative, “We envision Kenya as a growing hub for new AI innovations and talent, able to reap the economic benefits of AI while ensuring that models are developed with diverse perspectives. For this vision to become reality, digital skilling is a must.”

Sama’s mission isn’t just about creating advanced AI technologies, it’s also about making a difference in people’s lives. As a certified B-Corp, the company is focused on boosting economic opportunities for underserved communities. Thanks to its training and employment programs, Sama has helped over 68,000 people rise out of poverty—a commitment backed by an MIT-led Randomized Controlled Trial.
