In a new partnership with FIFA, Netflix announced it has acquired the rights to stream the 2027 and 2031 Women’s World Cup tournaments in Canada. The Canadian agreement was finalised last week, adding to the US deal which was finalised last December.
The 2027 tournament is scheduled for June 24 to July 25, bringing together 32 national teams to compete across eight host cities in Brazil. In 2031, the competition will expand for the first time to include 48 teams. Under the new agreement in Canada, Netflix will stream every match live for subscribers, making the entire event accessible across North America. FIFA’s Chief Business Officer, Romy Gai, noted that the broadened partnership reflects a mutual dedication to advancing women’s football worldwide.
He further added by stating “Following the landmark agreement between FIFA and Netflix in the United States, we are pleased to extend the footprint of our partnership to Canada — a nation with a rich FIFA Women’s World Cup history.”
This move signals a major shift for sports broadcasting in the continent. In the US, Fox Sports has held the rights for the past decade, while Canadian coverage has been with TSN since 2015, including through to the 2026 men’s World Cup.
It’s the first time Netflix has secured live football rights, joining the likes of DAZN, Apple TV, Amazon Prime and Fubo in competing for streaming sports audiences.
The 2027 Women’s World Cup will take place in Brazil. The host for the 2031 edition has yet to be decided, though the US has expressed interest in bidding alongside other Concacaf nations.
