M-KOPA, the African fintech company focused on inclusive financial services, has announced it has reached more than 3 million active customers for the first time. The milestone was confirmed in the company’s 2025 Impact Report, which also revealed that nine in ten of those customers believe M-KOPA has improved their quality of life.

The Nairobi-headquartered business, which provides credit and digital financial services to micro-entrepreneurs often excluded from traditional banking, has now served a total of 7 million people since its launch in 2011. Over this period, it has deployed more than $2 billion in credit across its markets. The company said it remains on course to reach 10 million active customers by 2030.

“What matters most to us is how many people we’re actively serving every day, those who stay engaged with us over time. Our active customer number reached 3 million for the first time this year,” said Jesse Moore, Co-Founder and Chief Executive of M-KOPA. “When we ask customers ‘does M-KOPA make your life better?’ 9 out of 10 say yes. That’s tangible and meaningful impact on millions of lives.”

M-KOPA refers to its customer base as “Every Day Earners”,  people who generate income daily within Africa’s informal economy but who are overlooked by financial products designed for salaried workers. According to the company, this gap is critical in Sub-Saharan Africa, where around 60% of the population has internet coverage but only 27% can afford to connect.

The report highlights that since 2020 the firm has enabled 2.5 million people to purchase their first smartphones. Among its women customers, 81% said they would not have been able to afford a device without M-KOPA’s financing. In addition, 55% of customers said it was their first experience of a formal financial product, while 67% confirmed it gave them first-time access to health insurance.

Through its “More than a Phone” platform, 70% of users are reported to use their smartphones for income-generating purposes, with 59% saying their earnings have risen since acquiring one.

M-KOPA’s strategy is structured around five core pillars:

  • Included: 55% of customers accessing their first financial product, with $2 billion in credit deployed to more than 7 million people.
  • Connected: 2.5 million first-time smartphone owners since 2020, with 40% of new customers in 2025 also buying their first device.
  • Prosperous: 70% of customers using smartphones to support work, 59% reporting higher income.
  • Sustainable: financing of more than 4,000 electric motorbikes, alongside 127,700 circular economy products, preventing an estimated 46,000 tonnes of CO₂.
  • Local Markets: over 35,000 sales agents, a 17% increase, with 57% saying M-KOPA was their first source of income.

The company also reported that in 2024 its local procurement spending across its markets reached $236 million. Women now account for 45% of its sales agent network and 40% of its customer base, with 86% of them reporting an improved quality of life.

M-KOPA currently operates in Kenya, Uganda, Ghana, Nigeria and South Africa. It employs more than 2,000 staff members and has a network of 35,000 sales agents.
