Irish femtech startup Joii has secured €2.4 million in funding to roll out its artificial intelligence-powered menstrual monitoring product, which allows users to quantify period blood volume and clot size using specialised pads and a connected mobile app.

Based in Dublin, Joii claims its system is the first of its kind to generate quantifiable menstrual health data via image analysis. The innovation combines uniquely designed evaluation pads with an AI-integrated smartphone app. Users scan the used pads, and the app returns detailed data including flow volume in millilitres, clot presence, and cycle trend insights, offering a much-needed alternative to subjective period tracking.

“For too long, women have been told to just ‘track their period’ without any real tools to measure what’s actually happening. With Joii, we’re changing that,” said founder Justyna Strzeszynska. “We’re helping people see their periods clearly, for the first time.”

Joii’s solution aims to improve diagnosis for those experiencing heavy menstrual bleeding, an issue affecting one in three women, by providing precise and standardised data. Such cases are often overlooked or misdiagnosed due to vague terms like “normal” or “heavy,” leading to delayed detection of conditions such as endometriosis, which can take up to a decade to diagnose.

The technology has already received Class I Medical Device certification in the UK and is protected under several patents. Clinical trials supported by the National Institute for Health and Care Research have shown promising results: 62% of users reported better communication with healthcare professionals, symptom screening improved by 288%, and menstrual health literacy increased by 134%.

Joii is also working with research institutions to build predictive models for reproductive health issues, including endometriosis and polycystic ovary syndrome. Their goal is to establish menstrual blood as a legitimate diagnostic source. The startup has enlisted support from medical experts including NHS consultant Dr. Fatema Mustansir Dawoodbhoy and Dr. Kushal Chummun, Consultant in Obstetrics and Gynaecology.

The Joii app is available for free on both iOS and Android, while its Evaluation Pads are sold for €6.95 through pharmacies, health retailers, and online platforms. Distribution deals have already been confirmed with outlets including Wholefoods Wholesale Ireland.

The funding is set to drive Joii’s expansion and cement its place in a space long overdue for innovation within women’s health technology.
