China has been awarded the hosting rights for the FIBA U19 Women’s Basketball World Cup 2027, marking the first time the country will stage this flagship women’s youth tournament. The event will take place in Chengdu from July 17 to 25, 2027, with the full support of the Sichuan Provincial Bureau of Sport and the Chinese Basketball Association.
Chengdu, home to around 20 million people and widely known as the “Panda Capital of the World,” has a proven track record of hosting major international sports events. The city has previously staged the 2025 World Games, the inaugural FIBA Women’s Basketball League Asia in 2024, and the FISU Summer World University Games in 2023. It also recently hosted the FIBA Women’s Asia Cup 2025 and is scheduled to run a FIBA Women’s Basketball World Cup 2026 Qualifying Tournament in March 2026.
The tournament will showcase the next generation of women’s basketball stars, providing a global stage for emerging talent. FIBA Secretary General Andreas Zagklis said: “The FIBA Executive Committee appreciates the continued work and success of the Chinese Basketball Association in showcasing our sport in the best possible way. They continue to harness their hosting experience and passion for basketball to deliver high quality FIBA events.
“With the popularity of the women’s game continuing to rise, this next edition of the FIBA U19 Women’s Basketball World Cup in China is destined to attract even higher levels of engagement and interest, helping us continue the growth of the sport globally.
“Most exciting of all, we will get to see the best rising stars in the game taking to the court. During the past editions alone, we have had the pleasure of watching high-profile players lighting up this flagship tournament, including for example the entire lineup of the All-Tournament First Team at the FIBA Women’s Basketball World Cup 2022 – A’ja Wilson, Breanna Stewart, Han Xu, Steph Talbot and Bridget Carleton.”
The United States, defending champions, will arrive in Chengdu looking to continue their dominant run after winning their fourth consecutive title and 11th crown overall at the 2025 U19 Women’s World Cup in Brno, Czechia, extending their winning streak to 28 games.
Before the 2027 edition, basketball fans will also follow the FIBA U17 Women’s Basketball World Cup 2026, which will again be held in Brno.
