byFlow, a startup based in Eindhoven, has secured a US patent for its groundbreaking 3D printer designed specifically for chocolate and other food products. This innovative technology, developed in 2015, opens up exciting possibilities for creating personalised chocolate experiences and more efficient production methods within the food industry. The patent is a significant achievement for the company, affirming their vision and potential in the realm of food technology. ByFlow believes this is just the beginning, with a future brimming with opportunities to create customised food items that could both delight consumers and reduce production costs.
Founded in 2015, byFlow has dedicated itself to advancing 3D printing technologies for food. The patent they’ve received is the culmination of years of research, development, and experimentation. With this recognition, the company now holds a competitive edge and is poised to enter new markets, ready to commercialise their innovative technology.
CEO Nina Hoff described the patent as the “hard-won cherry on top” of their efforts. She recalls the moment the news broke during a meeting with her brother and co-founder, Floris Hoff. “When we got the news, we were in a meeting with the team, and I got a little angry with Floris because he was looking at his phone distracted the whole time. When I asked him what he was doing, he looked at me and said that after 7 years, we finally got it together. We gave each other high-fives and cried some happy tears. After many hours of research, engineering, experimentation, and headaches – getting an IP is not easy, and you need a lot of patience – I am so incredibly happy that we got this through with the team and that we can finally celebrate this big milestone.”
The potential of 3D food printing extends beyond innovation in the kitchen. It could help address global food security challenges worsened by climate change. This technology offers solutions to reduce food waste, create more sustainable production methods, and even design food that meets specific nutritional requirements, thus promoting healthier diets.
Looking ahead, byFlow is excited about how its technology can push the boundaries of culinary creativity and transform production processes in the food industry. The company is eager to collaborate with global partners to explore the full potential of 3D chocolate and food printing. Their goal is not just to revolutionise food production, but also to make a lasting impact on how food is created and consumed, with a strong focus on sustainability and innovation.
