The Appalachian Power Foundation distributed more than $2.4 million in funding during 2025 to support community organisations across the company’s service territory, according to a press release issued this week. The funding followed the recognition of more than 80 organisations for their work in areas ranging from emergency response to social services.

Among the recipients was S.A.F.E., a sanctuary providing shelter and support for women and children escaping domestic abuse. The organisation received a $60,000 donation presented by Scott Jones, External Affairs Manager in West Virginia. S.A.F.E. offers refuge and critical assistance to survivors with limited housing options. “S.A.F.E. is providing help to those who truly have nowhere else to go. I’m thankful we were able to support their mission. It brings me comfort to know that, at least for a moment, these women and their children have a safe haven—a place where they can find solace and security together,” Jones said.

Funding from the Appalachian Power Foundation is aimed at supporting initiatives related to disaster relief, first responders, education, housing and food insecurity within Appalachian Power’s service areas. According to the release, the foundation allocated approximately $665,000 to support first responders in more than 20 municipalities and counties. The funding was used to purchase essential equipment, including drones, rescue tools, a gear decontamination washer, and to provide financial assistance for training needs.

Additional funding was directed towards addressing food and housing insecurity. The release stated that 25 organisations received grants to support pantry supplies, food boxes and meal programmes. A further $250,000 was assigned to help cover essential housing repairs for residents in need. S.A.F.E. said the support would have a direct impact on its ability to operate. “This grant will help keep our domestic violence shelter and rape crisis center running, and provide much-needed basic and essential needs and services to the survivors that we serve,” said Alice Walker, Executive Director of S.A.F.E.

Beyond emergency and social services, the foundation also invested in educational programmes for adults and children. Supported initiatives included those expanding internships, career readiness and work-based learning opportunities, as well as programmes offering English-Spanish language instruction. Aaron Walker, President and Chief Operating Officer of Appalachian Power, said the partnerships were intended to address immediate needs while contributing to long-term community development. “We are grateful for the opportunity to partner with these incredible organizations that provide essential services to our communities. We hope that our contributions will not only meet immediate needs but also foster hope and positive change for a brighter future for everyone we serve,” he said.
