Global education provider Kaplan is set to host a free webinar later this month focused on menopause care and gaps in women’s midlife health, in collaboration with Dr. Somi Javaid, founder of women’s health company HerMD.
The online event, titled Menopause Matters: The Case for Better Menopause Care to Improve Women’s Midlife Health, will take place on January 27 at 1 PM ET. It will bring together medical students, healthcare professionals and stakeholders to examine shortcomings in menopause education and the wider impact on women’s long-term health outcomes.
Dr. Javaid, a board-certified OB/GYN and surgeon, will lead the discussion alongside Kaplan, addressing what organisers describe as a critical lack of structured menopause training within the medical system. Data referenced during the webinar highlights that while 93% of medical residents strongly agree that residency programmes should have access to a standardised menopause curriculum, only 31% of OB/GYN residency programmes currently provide dedicated menopause education.
The consequences of these gaps extend beyond education. Menopause-related symptoms are linked to increased long-term health risks, including bone, brain and heart health, with up to 20% of bone loss occurring during the menopause transition. Economically, unmanaged symptoms are associated with productivity losses estimated at $1.8 billion annually in the United States, rising to $26.6 billion when healthcare costs are included.
Despite longstanding clinical evidence supporting the safety and effectiveness of hormone therapy, its use has declined sharply. In 2023, fewer than 4% of women aged between 50 and 59 were reported to be using hormone therapy, reflecting what organisers describe as a significant treatment gap.
Dr. Somi Javaid said: “It is time to recognize that menopause can have serious consequences if left undiagnosed and untreated. Providers must be equipped with evidence-based education to guide women toward personalized treatment pathways grounded in today’s data, not yesterday’s myths. The future of medicine demands prevention, not pursuit, of disease. Ignoring menopause education is no longer an option—the consequences are too great.”
The webinar is supported by in-kind sponsor dotted…, which focuses on advancing evidence-based menopause education and building partnerships across the healthcare sector to improve care for women in midlife and beyond.
An Ipsos poll conducted on behalf of Kaplan found that nearly half of all medical school students have used a Kaplan product or service during their academic studies.
Registration for the free webinar is now open, with further details available via the event page.
