Music composer A.R. Rahman has announced the launch of Rooh-e-Noor, an all-women musical ensemble formed under his KM Musiq label. The six-member group, led by Khatija Rahman and project head Kannika Urs, will make its world debut on November 21 at the Tanweer Festival in Sharjah.

The ensemble consists of Khatija Rahman, Pooja Tiwari, Sana Aziz, Shaoni, Amina Rafiq, and Shifa Ruby. Rooh-e-Noor combines spiritual and contemporary elements, introducing what Rahman described as a “unique blend of spiritual pop and modern influences.” The team is supported by producers Sana Aziz, Sarthak Kalyani, and Nakul Abhyankar.

According to Rahman, the group aims to highlight the role of women in Indian music and promote inclusivity in an industry where female representation has been limited. “Rooh-e-Noor isn’t just a band, it’s a light that connects hearts. Each of these women carries the confidence of modern artistry. Their collective voice is pure, powerful, rooted, and futuristic,” Rahman said in a statement.

The group’s name, Rooh-e-Noor, translates to “Soul of Light.” Its performances will include reimagined Indian classics, spiritual compositions, and original pieces, combining traditional music with contemporary production.

Led by Khatija Rahman, the initiative seeks to provide a platform for women musicians to collaborate, perform, and gain visibility in both Indian and international music circles. The ensemble’s mission also includes mentoring and supporting upcoming female talent in the music industry.

Rooh-e-Noor’s debut performance at the Tanweer Festival will open for A.R. Rahman’s established Sufi group. Following the premiere, the band is expected to release new music and participate in global performances.

The formation of Rooh-e-Noor marks a significant step in promoting gender inclusivity in Indian music. The project aligns with Rahman’s ongoing efforts to support music education and innovation through ventures like the KM Music Conservatory in Chennai.

By introducing Rooh-e-Noor, Rahman adds a new chapter to his efforts in empowering women through art and expanding India’s musical presence on the global stage.
