Alphabet Inc.’s Google has announced plans to invest an additional $9 billion in Virginia by 2026, expanding its cloud and artificial intelligence (AI) infrastructure across the state. The move highlights the rapid surge in data centre development as major technology firms race to keep up with the soaring demand created by AI.

The company said its latest commitment is not only about infrastructure but also about creating opportunities for local communities. “Google is investing an additional $9 billion in Virginia through 2026 in cloud and AI infrastructure. As we expand our local presence, including a new data center in Chesterfield County, we’re working with local partners on solutions for growing energy capacity demand, including efficiency programs and innovative technologies,” the announcement stated.

Alongside its physical expansion, Google is promising new training opportunities in AI. It has committed $1 billion to give all Virginia-based college students free access to the Google AI Pro plan and AI training for a year. The initiative involves the University of Virginia, Brightpoint Community College and Northern Virginia Community College, which are part of the first group of institutions to join the Google AI for Education Accelerator. The company said these resources will supplement the “Virginia Has Jobs” AI Career Launch Pad, which provides AI training for all Virginians.

Google has positioned its Virginia expansion as a long-term commitment to both infrastructure and people, linking the growth of its facilities to workforce development and education. By combining capital spending with training programmes, the company says it wants to help local communities benefit directly from the AI boom.
