Mary Robinson, the former President of Ireland, has partnered with TikTok to launch a new climate campaign, the TikTok Youth Climate Leaders Alliance. The initiative, in collaboration with The Mary Robinson Centre, targets individuals aged 18-30 seeking to drive significant change amidst the climate crisis.
The programme aims to equip participants with the necessary knowledge, skills, and tools to combat climate change effectively. It includes a climate literacy and leadership programme for secondary schools, complemented by digital learning resources. Additionally, participants will receive invitations to a climate change festival slated for September 2024.
With a capacity for up to 50 participants, the programme will run from May 1 to the year’s end. Key highlights comprise an eight-month climate leadership workshop series featuring guest speakers and practical climate actions, empowering participants to become leaders within their communities.
Furthermore, participants will engage in the Mary Robinson Climate Conference from June 5 to 7 in Ballina and visit local Ballina Green Town climate action projects. At the programme’s conclusion, five participants will receive a bursary to support their ongoing climate action endeavors.
The TikTok Youth Climate Leaders Alliance forms part of TikTok’s broader climate commitments, which include striving for operational carbon-neutrality by 2030 and promoting climate literacy and educational content on its platform.
In her statement, Mary Robinson expressed optimism about the programme’s potential to empower a new generation and address global challenges effectively. Speaking of the project, Mary Robinson, Chair of the Elders and former President of Ireland said: “It has the potential to deliver real impact, empowering a new generation and building a movement of young people equipped to address some of the global challenges ahead, and to drive significant change. I look forward to seeing their achievements in time.”
Elaine Fox of TikTok Ireland underscored the company’s commitment to supporting climate leaders and emphasized the initiative’s alignment with TikTok’s broader climate goals. She added: “Through this partnership, we are proud to offer the climate leaders of tomorrow the resources and support to empower them to make a significant impact. This ambitious programme is just one part of TikTok’s work against climate change and aligns with our wider 2030 net-zero commitments.”
