Two key appointments of women to leadership positions within the maritime sector have drawn commendation from the Women’s International Shipping and Trading Association (WISTA) Nigeria, describing the developments as significant for gender inclusion in the region.

In Ghana, Madam Jemilat Mahamah has been named Chairman of the Board of the Ghana Maritime Authority, placing her at a strategic helm of maritime governance in the country. The appointment has been well received across the industry, with WISTA Nigeria calling it a major win for women in maritime leadership.

“We are immensely proud of Madam Mahamah’s achievement,” said Dr. Odunayo Ani, President of WISTA Nigeria.

“Her leadership promises bold reforms and strategic progress for Ghana’s maritime sector.”

Dr. Ani added that the development is also a moment of pride for WISTA Ghana, WISTA Africa, and the wider WISTA global network.

Back in Nigeria, the maritime sector also saw another woman appointed to a top decision-making role. Ms. Iroghama Ogbeifun has joined the board of the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA), following her appointment by President Bola Tinubu.

Ms. Ogbeifun is CEO of Starzs Investments and has been an active member of WISTA Nigeria. Her deep industry expertise and leadership background were noted as key strengths she brings to the NIMASA board.

“Her appointment is a powerful affirmation of women’s capacity to lead and transform the industry,” Dr. Ani remarked.

WISTA Nigeria described both appointments as landmark achievements, acknowledging them as meaningful progress in the push for gender-balanced representation within maritime space.

“These milestones are more than symbolic, they demonstrate what is possible when competence meets opportunity,” said Dr. Ani.

The association reiterated its ongoing dedication to advocating for women in the maritime industry through collaborative partnerships and professional development efforts.
