Tata Motors has announced it will gift the soon-to-be-launched Tata Sierra SUV to each member of India’s Women’s World Cup-winning cricket team, celebrating their landmark victory against South Africa on November 2.

The announcement follows a wave of rewards for the players, including a ₹51-crore cash prize from the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) and individual honours from several state governments. India’s triumph at the Women’s World Cup marked a defining moment in the nation’s sporting history, with the team securing a 52-run win in the final at Navi Mumbai’s packed stadium.

“The Company will be presenting the top-end model of the Sierra to each member of the team, applauding their indomitable spirit and recognizing their immense contribution and sacrifice in bringing glory to the country,” Tata Motors said in a statement on Thursday.

The Tata Sierra, an iconic SUV first introduced in 1991, is set to return to the Indian market on November 25, 2025, as a modern five-door monocoque model. Originally built on the rugged “X2” platform of the Tata Telcoline, the Sierra is remembered as one of India’s first homegrown SUVs and a symbol of automotive innovation.

“The Indian Women’s Cricket Team has made the entire nation proud with their extraordinary performance and remarkable win. Their journey stands as a true testament to determination and the power of belief, qualities that inspire every Indian,” said Shailesh Chandra, Managing Director and CEO of Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles Ltd.

India’s World Cup campaign saw standout performances from across the squad. Shafali Verma’s quickfire 87 runs and Deepti Sharma’s five-wicket haul guided India to victory in the final. The win made Harmanpreet Kaur only the third Indian captain, after Kapil Dev in 1983 and MS Dhoni in 2011, to lift a 50-over World Cup trophy for India.

State governments also announced rewards for local heroes, including ₹2.25 crore each from Maharashtra for Smriti Mandhana, Jemimah Rodrigues, and Radha Yadav, and ₹1 crore from Himachal Pradesh for pacer Renuka Singh Thakur.

Following the triumph, the team met Prime Minister Narendra Modi at his residence in New Delhi. During the meeting, the Prime Minister commended the players’ historic achievement and urged them to continue promoting sports and fitness across the country, encouraging each member to visit their schools to inspire the next generation of athletes.

India’s road to the title was not without challenges. After a three-match losing streak during the group stages, the team rebounded to defeat seven-time champions Australia in the semi-final, thanks to a stunning unbeaten century from Jemimah Rodrigues. Their resilience carried them through to the final, where they delivered a commanding performance to claim their first-ever Women’s World Cup.
