Samsung C&T wins $1.3 billion EPC contract for major carbon capture facility in Qatar

Once in operation, the facility will manage up to 4.1 million tonnes of carbon annually, which Samsung C&T says positions it among the Middle East’s largest carbon management sites and a significant contributor to Qatar’s broader energy transition efforts.

Samsung C&T E&C Group has secured a letter of award from QatarEnergy LNG for the development of a major carbon compression and transport facility in Ras Laffan Industrial City. The engineering, procurement and construction contract is valued at around KRW 1.9 trillion ($1.3 billion).

The project site is located roughly 80km north of Doha and is designed to capture and compress carbon dioxide generated by nearby LNG liquefaction plants. The system will also remove moisture from the emissions before transporting the CO₂ through 20km of underground pipelines to a depleted gas reservoir for long-term geological storage. Completion is expected in 2030.

Once in operation, the facility will manage up to 4.1 million tonnes of carbon annually, which Samsung C&T says positions it among the Middle East’s largest carbon management sites and a significant contributor to Qatar’s broader energy transition efforts.

Samsung C&T will deliver the full scope of the project, from design through to construction, applying advanced engineering methods to maintain safety, reliability and efficiency throughout the compression and transport phases. The company noted that the technical demands of the facility, including stringent pressure and temperature control requirements, will draw on its previous experience in Qatar’s LNG sector.

The company also intends to work closely with established local partners and minimise disruption to existing operations within Ras Laffan during construction.

“This contract builds on our extensive track record in Qatar’s major projects,” said Byung-soo Lee, Executive Vice President and Head of Global Business Development Division at Samsung C&T E&C Group. “Together with our solar power initiatives, this project allows Samsung C&T to play a central role in advancing Qatar’s sustainability policies and low-carbon development goals.”
