HE Minister of State for International Cooperation, Dr. Mariam bint Ali bin Nasser Al Misnad, held discussions on Tuesday with HE President of the Women’s Development Business (WDB), Zanele Mbeki, during an official visit to Johannesburg.

The meeting, which took place on 18 November, focused on the existing relationship between Qatar and the Women’s Development Business and examined areas where cooperation could be expanded. Officials said the talks centred on programmes designed to support women’s economic participation, with particular attention to the WDB’s model of microlending and skills development.

According to the Ministry, Dr. Al Misnad and Ms. Mbeki reviewed the organisation’s long-running experience in offering financial access to women who are unable to secure traditional bank loans. They also explored ways in which this approach might align with Qatar’s international cooperation objectives.

The discussions further included consideration of joint initiatives aimed at strengthening women’s participation in South Africa’s economic landscape. Both parties expressed interest in identifying practical programmes that could be implemented in partnership, particularly in communities where women face barriers to employment or entrepreneurship.

Officials noted that the talks formed part of a wider set of engagements during Dr. Al Misnad’s visit, which is intended to expand Qatar’s collaboration with South African institutions working on social and economic development. The Minister emphasised the importance of building sustainable channels of cooperation that help advance women’s roles in local and regional economies.

The meeting concluded with agreement to continue consultations on potential projects and to examine frameworks through which both sides can coordinate future efforts. Further details are expected following additional technical discussions between the two parties.
