YWCA USA has appointed Dr Ruth T. Jones Nichols as interim chief executive officer, effective 26 October 2026, as the organisation begins a national search for its next permanent CEO.
Nichols brings more than 30 years of experience in nonprofit leadership and social impact, with a career focused on equity, opportunity and community development. Her appointment follows the departure of Margaret Mitchell, who led the organisation through a period of significant change.
Before joining YWCA USA, Nichols served as executive vice president of local and national programmes at the Local Initiatives Support Corporation (LISC), where she oversaw a nationwide portfolio of local offices and initiatives. She previously served as executive director of YWCA South Hampton Roads, giving her direct experience within the YWCA network.
Her connection to the organisation also extends to her personal history. According to YWCA USA, Nichols and her family found refuge in a YWCA shelter when she was a child. The experience influenced her commitment to supporting women, families and communities.
Ashlee Davis, chair of the YWCA USA Board of Directors, said Nichols brings extensive leadership experience, a strong understanding of community impact and a personal connection to the organisation’s mission.
Nichols will work alongside Mitchell through 30 October to support the leadership transition and maintain continuity across the organisation. The board is working with Protégé Executive Search to identify a permanent chief executive.
YWCA USA said its operations, programmes, member services and partnerships would continue throughout the transition.
The national organisation forms part of a network of more than 190 community-based YWCA associations across the United States. Its work focuses on eliminating racism, empowering women and promoting justice, dignity and equal opportunity. Its programmes include services addressing domestic violence, housing, childcare, economic advancement and racial justice.
Nichols’ appointment places an experienced nonprofit executive at the head of the organisation while its board undertakes the search for permanent leadership.
