Saudi Arabia has marked a significant milestone in its diplomatic history with the appointment of Wafa bint Abdullah Al-Marzouqi as Consul General in Houston, United States.
Her appointment makes Al-Marzouqi the first Saudi woman to hold the rank of consul general, placing her in a senior diplomatic position representing the Kingdom abroad. She formally took the oath of office before Saudi Foreign Minister Prince Faisal bin Farhan at a ceremony held at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs headquarters in Riyadh.
A historic step in Saudi diplomacy
The appointment represents a notable development in the growing participation of Saudi women in the country’s diplomatic service.
As Consul General in Houston, Al-Marzouqi will lead Saudi Arabia’s consular representation in a major US city. Saudi consulates play an important role in providing services to Saudi citizens overseas, while also representing the Kingdom in their respective jurisdictions.
Her appointment comes alongside that of Dr Sultan bin Farraj Al-Nafel, who was appointed Saudi Consul General in Erbil, Iraq. Both diplomats took their oaths before Foreign Minister Prince Faisal bin Farhan during the Riyadh ceremony.
A milestone for women in diplomacy
Al-Marzouqi’s appointment is particularly significant because the consul general role represents one of the senior levels of diplomatic responsibility. Her elevation adds to the growing visibility of Saudi women in senior positions across government, diplomacy and international affairs.
The move also follows her earlier advancement within Saudi Arabia’s diplomatic service. In 2025, the Saudi Council of Ministers approved her promotion to the rank of Minister Plenipotentiary, marking another step in her progression through the foreign service.
Her career progression demonstrates the increasing presence of Saudi women in roles involving international representation and public leadership.
Representing Saudi Arabia in Houston
Houston is an important centre for Saudi-US engagement, with connections spanning business, energy, education and wider economic and diplomatic relationships.
In her new position, Al-Marzouqi will oversee the Kingdom’s consular responsibilities in the city while representing Saudi Arabia and supporting its citizens in the United States.
Her appointment therefore carries significance beyond the historic nature of the role itself. It places a Saudi woman at the forefront of the Kingdom’s official consular representation in a major international city.
A new chapter for Saudi women in leadership
Across recent years, Saudi women have taken on increasingly prominent roles in public institutions, business, diplomacy and other professional fields.
Al-Marzouqi’s appointment adds another important milestone to that progression. As the first Saudi woman to serve as consul general, she becomes a visible example of women advancing into senior positions within the Kingdom’s diplomatic establishment.
For women pursuing careers in international relations and public service, her appointment represents a significant moment, placing female leadership at the centre of Saudi Arabia’s diplomatic representation abroad.
Wafa Al-Marzouqi’s historic appointment is not simply a first. It is another marker of the changing face of leadership in Saudi Arabia’s public and diplomatic institutions.
