Scale has announced that it will lead a $60 million Series B funding round for GC AI, a company building AI-powered tools for in-house legal teams.
Legal technology has been one of the earliest industries to see large language model (LLM) innovation, with hundreds of millions of dollars invested in recent years to develop AI tools for law firms. However, many of these tools have focused on serving external counsel, leaving the needs of in-house legal departments largely unaddressed. GC AI was created to change that.
General Counsels (GCs) play a critical role as trusted advisers to CEOs, often being the first point of contact for legal matters within a company. They are tasked with navigating increasingly complex regulations and managing a wide range of legal issues from employment and mergers and acquisitions to privacy, compliance, and contracts. Unlike external firms with specialist teams, in-house departments must handle all these areas simultaneously, frequently under intense time pressure.
Due to the volume and variety of their workload, many GCs are forced to outsource even straightforward legal queries to costly external counsel. Historically, this has made automating in-house legal work difficult. However, the rapid advancement of AI and LLMs is beginning to change that landscape.
Founded two years ago by Cecilia and Bardia, who previously held legal and engineering roles at Replit and Amazon, GC AI was designed to address these specific challenges. The platform provides in-house legal teams with AI-driven tools that streamline legal research, internal guidance drafting, contract review, and redlining. Through a dedicated suite of tools and an integrated Microsoft Word add-in, GC AI enables teams to save significant time and reduce reliance on external lawyers.
According to the company, the software helps legal teams reclaim dozens of working hours each week and cut external counsel costs by as much as tens of thousands of dollars annually.
Scale’s investment decision was influenced by what it described as “overwhelming customer love” for GC AI. The firm cited strong user feedback during its due diligence process, highlighting how the product has become integral to legal operations across multiple companies.
“GC AI has been the most popular tool I’ve ever rolled out to a legal department,” said one customer.
Cecilia has also cultivated a strong professional community through her teaching of AI applications for in-house legal teams, further amplifying the company’s visibility and credibility.
Looking ahead, Scale said GC AI is well-positioned to build not only the leading platform for in-house legal teams but also to expand its reach to other business units that rely on legal input. The company’s long-term vision includes reshaping how enterprises allocate budgets traditionally reserved for external law firms.
