The Saudi aid agency KSrelief, in collaboration with the UN Development Programme (UNDP), has launched an exciting new initiative in Aden aimed at empowering Yemeni women through renewable energy projects.

The programme will support the establishment of 375 small-scale ventures focused on the production and marketing of solar-powered household devices. These products include solar lanterns, stoves, and traditional ovens. The goal is to provide local women with the tools and skills needed to produce and sell these energy-efficient items, contributing to the overall sustainability of their communities.

As part of the project, 375 women will receive hands-on vocational training in the use of solar energy, alongside courses in life skills and business management. Additionally, practical training guides will be provided to help women work with solar lanterns and traditional ovens.

The initiative will also supply alternative solar energy sources, such as basic lighting and cooking devices, produced by women-run businesses in Hadramout and Lahij. In total, these efforts are expected to benefit around 21,375 women in Yemen.

According to Alaa Ali, the UNDP project manager, the initiative is designed to address the energy needs of vulnerable communities while also creating sustainable livelihoods for Yemeni women. Ali explained, “The project focuses on meeting the energy needs of vulnerable communities and creating sustainable livelihoods for Yemeni women.”

The project also aims to increase women’s participation in solar energy businesses, helping to expand the use of renewable energy for everyday household tasks like lighting and cooking. Furthermore, it seeks to support women in building market-driven projects that not only address local needs but also create economic opportunities for women in rural areas.

By focusing on improving the quality of life for women and their families, the programme aligns with Saudi Arabia’s broader efforts to empower women in Yemen. It provides them with the resources and skills to generate income, strengthen their role in society, and contribute to the development of their communities in a sustainable way.
