The Follow-up Committee for the Implementation of the “Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against Women” (CEDAW) held its second meeting for 2024 on Saturday, 14th December. The session took place at the National Centre for Autism and was chaired by Dr. Laila Ahmed Al Najjar, Minister of Social Development and the Chairperson of the Committee.
In her address, Dr. Laila highlighted Oman’s commitment to empowering women across various sectors, emphasising the significant progress made by women in the country. She expressed appreciation for the efforts of the Committee’s members, recognising their valuable contributions to the ongoing initiatives.
During the meeting, the Committee reviewed the Muscat Declaration, reflecting on the progress made in implementing the “Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action.” This review comes 30 years after the Convention was endorsed in 1995. The Committee also assessed how national indicators related to women’s issues align with international standards, focusing on enhancing the status of women within the broader framework of comprehensive development.
The legal empowerment of women was another key topic of discussion, as the Committee continued its work on advancing gender equality in Oman.
