COVID-19, once the world’s most pressing issue, has faded from the forefront of daily conversations, but that doesn’t mean it has disappeared. Despite the progress in managing the pandemic, COVID-19 still poses a significant threat to both global health and the economy, and it would be a mistake to let our guard down.

One of the key reasons COVID-19 remains a concern is the emergence of new variants. The virus has shown a remarkable ability to mutate, and these mutations can lead to variants that are more contagious or even more dangerous than the original strain. In recent months, there has been an uptick in cases in the Northern Hemisphere, sparking concerns that new and potentially more virulent strains may be circulating. This is especially troubling given the plateau in vaccination rates in many parts of the world, which leaves large segments of the population vulnerable to these new variants.

Moreover, the long-term health consequences of COVID-19 are becoming increasingly clear. While many people recover from the initial infection, a significant number suffer from what is now known as “long COVID.” This condition can lead to persistent symptoms that last for months or even years, affecting various organs and systems in the body. Those who were hospitalised with COVID-19 are particularly at risk, with some studies suggesting that the risk of death remains elevated even years after the initial infection.

Vaccination remains the most effective tool we have against COVID-19, but it’s concerning that a large portion of the global population remains unvaccinated or hasn’t received the necessary booster shots. Recent data shows that the vast majority of COVID-19 deaths are occurring among those who have not been fully vaccinated. This underscores the importance of maintaining high vaccination rates, not just to prevent severe disease but also to curb the spread of the virus.

The economic impact of COVID-19 also cannot be ignored. The pandemic has caused massive disruptions to global supply chains, labour markets, and healthcare systems, and these effects are still being felt. Many businesses, particularly those in sectors like tourism and hospitality, remain vulnerable to the threat of new outbreaks and the resulting public health measures. The uncertainty surrounding COVID-19 continues to cast a shadow over the global economy, slowing down recovery efforts.

And then there is long COVID, which has emerged as a major public health issue. Millions of people around the world are experiencing symptoms that linger long after their initial infection. This not only affects their quality of life but also has broader social and economic implications. The burden on healthcare systems is growing, and workforce productivity is taking a hit as more people find themselves unable to work due to ongoing health issues.

While COVID-19 may no longer dominate the headlines, it remains a serious threat. The emergence of new variants, the long-term health consequences, and the ongoing economic disruptions are all reasons why we cannot afford to become complacent. Maintaining vaccination efforts and public health measures is crucial if we are to avoid a resurgence of the pandemic and its devastating impacts on global health and the economy.
