Democratic Republic of Congo’s President Felix Tshisekedi has appointed Judith Suminwa Tuluka as the country’s first-ever female prime minister. This historic appointment follows a period of political transition after Tshisekedi’s re-election and inauguration for a second term.

Judith Suminwa Tuluka, an economist and former planning minister, assumes office amidst high expectations and challenges.

“I know that the task is great and the challenges [are] immense, but with the support of the president and that of everyone, we will get there,” Ms Tuluka said at a press conference on Monday after her appointment.

Suminwa’s appointment is a significant step towards gender equality in African politics, aligning with broader continental efforts to increase women’s representation in leadership roles. While Congo faces various challenges, including conflict in eastern regions and economic disparities, the new prime minister’s experience and expertise in international development and governance position her to address these issues effectively.

President Tshisekedi’s focus on eradicating corruption, promoting economic growth, and enhancing security remains pivotal, with Suminwa Tuluka expected to play a key role in advancing these goals. As African countries strive for greater gender inclusivity in politics, Congo’s appointment of its first female prime minister reflects a positive trend towards more comprehensive and inclusive governance.

While Congo’s gender equality in politics may not yet match leading nations like Rwanda, where parliamentary gender diversity is notably high, Suminwa’s appointment signifies progress and potential for further advancements. Studies suggest that increased female representation in decision-making bodies leads to more inclusive policies addressing diverse societal issues, from healthcare to economic development.

As Suminwa Tuluka assumes her new responsibilities and forms a new cabinet, the focus remains on achieving peace, development, and equality in Congo, contributing to a more prosperous and equitable future for the nation and its people.
