Apple and Google are currently engaged in discussions regarding the potential integration of Google’s Gemini technology into upcoming iPhone models, as reported by Bloomberg’s Mark Gurnman. This collaboration could signify a significant development for Google’s Gemini chatbot, which has faced criticism in recent times.

While Apple has been working on incorporating various AI features into its iOS 18 operating system using its own AI models, these enhancements are anticipated to be device-centric rather than cloud-based, according to Gurnman’s findings. Partnering with Google could enable the introduction of a diverse array of generative AI capabilities, such as image generation and essay writing based on a single textual prompt.

However, the ongoing negotiations suggest that Apple may not be as advanced in its AI endeavors as previously thought. Despite reports of Apple testing its large language model, Ajax, and providing employees with access to the Apple GPT chatbot, sources cited by Gurnman indicate that Apple’s AI technology currently lags behind that of Google and its competitors.

While discussions between Google and Apple are ongoing, any formal agreement is unlikely to be announced until at least June, typically when Apple hosts its Worldwide Developers Conference. Gurnman also suggests that Apple may explore alternative options for generative AI technology, potentially considering solutions from companies like OpenAI or Anthropic.

Should a partnership materialize, it could offer benefits to both Apple and Google. For Google, integrating Gemini with Apple’s vast user base of approximately 2 billion individuals could provide a significant advantage in the fiercely competitive AI market. Meanwhile, Apple may leverage this collaboration to enhance its AI capabilities and mitigate concerns surrounding its own technology’s perceived shortcomings.
