SmartestEnergy US has announced a new partnership with GridBeyond to optimise three battery energy storage systems (BESS) in Texas, totalling 29.7 MW. The agreement, revealed on 3 December, will see GridBeyond provide its advanced price forecasting, bid optimisation and trading technology to help the assets operate more effectively within the ERCOT market.

The collaboration will use GridBeyond’s AI-driven Bid Optimizer, a system designed to maximise revenue by positioning storage assets to respond quickly to price spikes in ERCOT’s highly volatile electricity market. The technology will support both day-ahead and real-time optimisation, enabling the batteries to participate more fully across energy and ancillary service markets.

According to the companies, GridBeyond’s platform integrates advanced analytics and real-time data processing to provide precise control of energy storage assets. Its cloud-based architecture allows for flexible and scalable management, offering remote monitoring and operational efficiency. With BESS increasingly seen as essential to balancing renewable generation and strengthening grid reliability, the partnership aims to enhance both commercial performance and system resilience.

Gavin Baker, VP Trading and Origination at SmartestEnergy US, said:
“In a market as dynamic as ERCOT, effective optimization is key to maximising value for battery storage assets. Partnering with GridBeyond allows us to combine its advanced technology with our trading expertise, to deliver optimized energy solutions.”

Sean McEvoy, GridBeyond U.S. President said: “We are excited to partner with SmartestEnergy on these important projects in ERCOT, one of the world’s most competitive and fast-evolving electricity markets. This deal further reinforces our commitment to enabling energy storage systems to deliver enhanced value and profitability through intelligent optimization solutions. This partnership with a fellow sophisticated European clean energy leader confirms GridBeyond as a global leader in energy storage optimization and market participation”.

Both organisations note that revenue opportunities for battery storage in ERCOT are shifting due to rising competition and evolving market conditions. GridBeyond says its recent benchmarking shows up to a 50% improvement in revenue during volatile periods when compared with competing optimisation solutions.

GridBeyond will continue to focus on innovation within the sector, supporting businesses as they adapt to the complexities of a rapidly changing energy landscape.
