The Sharjah Business Women Council (SBWC) has revealed a major opportunity for women in technology, announcing that it is now accepting applications from UAE-based, female-led startups for fully sponsored participation at Expand North Star 2025. The global startup showcase, organised by Dubai World Trade Centre, will take place at Dubai Harbour between 12 and 15 October.

As part of the sponsorship, eight female founders from the UAE will be chosen to exhibit their ventures at the international event. The initiative is designed to bring local entrepreneurial talent to the attention of international investors, venture capitalists, and industry leaders.

Each selected business will also automatically qualify for the Supernova Challenge, billed as the world’s largest startup pitch competition, which carries a prize fund worth $214,000 in equity-free grants. The top award alone offers a $100,000 cash prize.

Now in its 10th year, Expand North Star has grown into the largest startup and investor event of its kind globally. It is hosted by the Dubai Chamber of Digital Economy and held in partnership with Gitex Global.

H.E. Maryam Bin Al Shaikh, Director of SBWC, highlighted the importance of the initiative for women-led businesses in the UAE. She said: “Beyond our comprehensive business ecosystem at SBWC, one of our core missions is to ensure that the pioneering women shaping the UAE’s economy have the opportunity to excel on the global stage. By empowering our members at Expand North Star, we not only support their growth, but position them to become the next generation of leaders shaping innovation for the entire region. The ‘Supernova Challenge’ is where great ideas meet global opportunity, and we are proud to open that door for female-led startups.”

Exclusive sponsorship benefits

The sponsorship package covers a prime exhibition pod at the event, ensuring visibility to thousands of attendees representing more than 100 countries. Alongside entry to the Supernova Challenge, participants will also compete for additional prizes through dedicated award tracks.

These include the Sustainability Leaders Pitch Competition, supported by North Star Impact, which carries a $10,000 grant for startups making strides in social and environmental change. The Fintech & Blockchain Disruptor Award, run by Fintech Surge & Future Blockchain Summit, will also award $10,000 in equity-free funding to the most promising innovation in financial technology.

How to apply

Applications are open to UAE-based female founders or co-founders of licensed startups operating for fewer than five years. Applicants must also be SBWC members, although membership can be applied for during the registration process. A selection committee will assess all submissions based on a range of factors including the originality of the idea, market potential, strength of the business model, current traction, and team capabilities. The deadline for applications is 15 September.

Sharjah’s ecosystem for women in business

Operating under the patronage of Her Highness Sheikha Jawaher bint Mohammed Al Qasimi, Wife of His Highness the Ruler of Sharjah, the SBWC has long been dedicated to creating opportunities for female entrepreneurs. The Council provides a platform for networking, capacity-building initiatives, and policy advocacy, helping embed women more firmly into the UAE’s economic landscape.

Through this latest initiative, SBWC is providing its members with direct access to one of the most influential stages for startups worldwide. By connecting innovative female-led businesses with investors and decision-makers, the Council is aiming to ensure that women play an increasingly prominent role in shaping the UAE’s future as a hub for innovation and enterprise.
