The Philippines has appointed Corazon A. Padiernos, a long-time women’s rights advocate, as its new representative to Taiwan. She will head efforts to deepen bilateral relations between Manila and Taipei.

In a statement released on Tuesday, the Manila Economic and Cultural Office (MECO) confirmed that Padiernos will assume the roles of chairperson and resident representative. MECO serves as the Philippines’ de facto embassy in Taiwan, representing national interests in the absence of formal diplomatic ties.

Before taking on her new position, Padiernos was a member of MECO’s board of directors, where she oversaw the office’s tourism and agriculture sectors. “MECO warmly welcomes Chairperson Padiernos and looks forward to her leadership in further strengthening the partnership and people-to-people ties between the Philippines and Taiwan,” the office said.

According to MECO, Padiernos is recognised as an “advocate for women’s empowerment” and has actively supported initiatives promoting gender equality. She has previously held leadership roles at the Zonta Club of De Valle Verde, the Philippine chapter of Zonta International, a global organisation dedicated to empowering women and girls through service and advocacy.

Padiernos replaces Cheloy E. Velicaria-Garafil, the former press secretary to President Ferdinand Marcos Jr., who was appointed as MECO head in October 2024. Garafil has since been named the new secretary general of the House of Representatives, succeeding Reginald Velasco.

MECO said Padiernos brings a wealth of experience in business management, marketing, and international service from both the private and non-profit sectors, which will aid her in advancing cooperation between the two territories.
