Mira Murati, the former Chief Technology Officer at OpenAI, has embarked on an exciting new venture after leaving the company last September. Together with co-founders John Schulman, Barret Zoph, and Lilian Weng, Murati has established Thinking Machines Lab, a fresh artificial intelligence start-up. This new company is part of the growing wave of innovative enterprises aiming to take the lead in the rapidly evolving A.I. field.

Thinking Machines Lab has a clear vision: to build artificial intelligence systems that work alongside humans rather than operating independently. The company’s focus is on developing A.I. models that foster collaboration in areas like science and programming. By prioritising these fields, Thinking Machines Lab hopes to drive meaningful breakthroughs and bring about new possibilities for human-A.I. interaction.

Murati, who is 36 years old, had a prominent role in shaping OpenAI’s success, particularly in the development of major innovations like ChatGPT. However, her time at OpenAI ended after a period of significant upheaval. Following the unexpected removal of Sam Altman as CEO in November 2023, Murati, along with other senior OpenAI executives, left the company. Altman’s reinstatement just five days later marked the conclusion of a tense few weeks at OpenAI, which saw tensions rise over the company’s direction and philosophy regarding the future of A.I. Murati even briefly stepped in as interim CEO before her departure in late 2023.

She is not alone in this shift towards starting new ventures. Other former OpenAI leaders, including co-founder Ilya Sutskever, have also launched their own A.I. companies. These start-ups, alongside tech giants like Google, Meta, and Microsoft, are in a fierce race to advance A.I. technologies, which continue to have profound implications for the workforce and society at large.

With Thinking Machines Lab, Murati and her team aim to contribute to the development of A.I. that serves humanity in a more collaborative way, positioning themselves as key players in the ongoing global competition.
