Women Radio 91.7 has made history by introducing “NIMI,” Nigeria’s very first Women Radio Intelligent Virtual Assistant. This exciting development comes in collaboration with the Centre for Journalism Innovation and Development (CJID) and the Voice of Women Empowerment Foundation, marking a significant step forward in the integration of artificial intelligence with traditional radio broadcasting.
The launch of NIMI represents a major shift in how radio content is produced, distributed, and consumed, combining the power of AI with human-driven communication. In her welcoming message, Toun Okewale Sonaiya, CEO of Women Radio 91.7, explained that the goal is to inspire others to embrace the future of AI, provide access to trustworthy information, and enhance the overall listener experience. The initiative seeks to merge cutting-edge technology with a focus on people, making radio more engaging and accessible.
The brains behind this revolutionary virtual assistant is Tayo Kalejaiye, a technical engineer who designed NIMI to foster smooth interactions with listeners. NIMI is capable of offering news updates, resources, and assistance, both on-air and online. With its advanced features, NIMI aims to make radio content more accessible, ensuring that the voices of underrepresented communities are heard and that everyone has access to essential information.
The launch event also included a series of inspiring speeches from key figures in the media and innovation sectors. Toyosi Akerele-Ogunsiji, founder of Rise Network, Adedeji Adekunle, Programmes Director at the Nigeria Media Innovation Program, and Sam Onigbanjo, Managing Director of the AI Academy for Beginners, were among those who addressed the audience, sharing their thoughts on the future of broadcasting and the role of technology in shaping it.
A thought-provoking panel discussion followed, exploring the potential for artificial intelligence to enhance journalism and broadcasting, while maintaining ethical standards. Panellists included Motunrayo Alaka, Executive Director of the Wole Soyinka Centre for Investigative Journalism, and Kayode Okikiolu, a well-known anchor at Channels TV. Together, they discussed the balance between innovation and professionalism, offering valuable insights into how AI can be integrated responsibly into the world of media.
