MTN Nigeria, one of the largest telecommunications companies in Africa. and Digital Encode, a cybersecurity firm, have teamed up with eBusiness Life Communication Limited to support the 2025 International Girls in ICT Day, which is a global event celebrated every year during the months of April and May.

The event set for May 15, 2025, in Lagos is part of a worldwide initiative led by the International Telecommunications Union (ITU) to address the gender gap in Information and Communication Technology (ICT). This year’s theme, “Girls in ICTs: Bridging ALL Divides for an Inclusive Digital Transformation,” aims to ignite young girls’ interest in ICT careers and provide them with the resources needed to succeed in the digital era.

According to Mrs. Ufuoma Emuophedaro, CEO of eBusiness Life and the event’s convener, MTN and Digital Encode’s support goes beyond mere endorsement—they are making tangible investments in the future of Nigeria’s digital landscape. Their involvement brings top-tier expertise and industry influence, which is instrumental in opening doors for female students who might otherwise have limited access to technology and digital education.

We need to deliberately provide avenues for young girls to envision themselves as future engineers, tech innovators, and digital leaders in order to bridge the gender gap, Emuophedaro said.  Women make up fewer than 25% of the workforce in Nigeria’s tech sector, which continues to have a severe gender imbalance.  The initiative seeks to alter that narrative through inspirational seminars, practical competitions, and mentorship.

This year’s event will feature keynote addresses by well-known women in the ICT industry, a STEM quiz competition, and a robotics and AI challenge for female secondary school students.  Stakeholders from the public and business sectors will also be there to express support and discuss ways to create a tech ecosystem that is more inclusive.
