Philanthropist Melinda French Gates has unveiled a 215 million dollar funding commitment dedicated to transforming women’s healthcare access and medical research across the globe. The multi-million dollar injection will focus heavily on addressing historic funding shortfalls across two critical life stages, reproductive years and midlife health.

This latest financial pledge brings the total philanthropic capital allocated by French Gates to women’s medical initiatives over the past two years to more than 600 million dollars. The distribution of these newly announced funds will be managed through Pivotal, an umbrella organisation founded by French Gates to drive social progress for women and young individuals.

Current global health data indicates that women experience higher instances of illness and disability compared to men, spending roughly nine years of their lives in suboptimal health. Despite these statistics, global medical innovation spending remains heavily skewed, with just five cents out of every dollar designated for medical research directed toward women’s specific health needs.

The funding framework balances the immediate preservation of reproductive healthcare with long-term scientific research. Initial distributions include a 10 million dollar grant allocated to The Menopause Society to expand front-line clinical training and clinician education. A further 40 million dollars has been awarded to Co-Impact to support local health networks integrating maternal mental health into primary care systems, with an initial emphasis on African nations.

Additionally, the capital commitment accounts for a 50 million dollar contribution to a joint project with Wellcome Leap. Originally established in autumn 2025, this specific collaboration aims to speed up analytical medical research, including the rollout of VISIBLE, a new diagnostics initiative exploring women’s heart disease. Further funding partners are expected to be confirmed throughout the remainder of 2026 and into 2027.

Melinda French Gates, Philanthropist and Founder of Pivotal, said: “Too many women still go without clear answers and quality healthcare at the moments that shape their lives—from their reproductive years through menopause. When women get the right care at the right time, it changes everything, not just for them but for their families and entire societies. With greater focus and funding, we can stop asking women to simply live with poor health and start delivering the solutions they need.”

Dr. Stephanie Faubion, medical director of The Menopause Society, comments: “Menopause is a universal life stage, but quality care is not universally available. With this funding, we can scale evidence-based training for front-line clinicians and extend our reach to areas where menopause care has long been overlooked. This is a meaningful step toward ensuring women receive the informed, compassionate care they need and deserve.”

Olivia Leland, Founder and CEO of Co-Impact, said: “What makes this partnership powerful is a shared belief that lasting change comes from trusting local leaders, investing flexibly, and committing for the long term. Together with Pivotal, we can bring that approach to a critical and underfunded gap in women’s health, supporting locally rooted organizations to integrate mental health into maternal and primary care.”

Regina E. Dugan, CEO of Wellcome Leap, comments: “Some of the biggest unanswered questions in women’s health sit in areas that have gone too long without serious scientific attention. Pivotal is treating those questions as urgent, solvable, and worth backing with serious ambition.”
