King Abdulaziz University has made a significant stride towards gender inclusivity by opening admissions for female students in its Faculty of Maritime Studies. This initiative marks the first time women can pursue maritime specializations at the university, alongside the establishment of an agency dedicated to female student affairs within the faculty.
This move aligns with the Kingdom’s Vision 2030, which aims to empower Saudi women by providing opportunities in new professions, thereby expanding the scope of studies and research in vital sectors like maritime transport and logistics. The initiative is also intended to foster growth and development in the maritime industry, contributing to the national economy.
Dr. Faisal Al-Dhaibani, the dean of the Faculty of Maritime Studies, emphasized the importance of investing in the capabilities of Saudi women within the maritime transport sector. He noted that the faculty’s strategy focuses on delivering globally recognized education and training in areas such as surveying and maritime transport, which will help cultivate skilled human resources and enhance overall efficiency for sustainable development.
Dr. Maha Hegazy, the vice dean for female students, highlighted the range of specializations available, including marine engineering, maritime navigation, marine surveying, supply chain management, and maritime transport. She explained that graduates will have opportunities to work in port sectors, maritime transport companies, and related entities in both public and private sectors. The acceptance of female students into these fields is part of a broader effort to address manpower shortages in the maritime industry, reflecting a commitment to bridging the gender gap in the workforce.
Through these initiatives, King Abdulaziz University is paving the way for increased representation of women in various industries, particularly in maritime transport, in line with global trends and the Kingdom’s developmental goals.
