Leadership and vision for the future
Danat Al Emarat’s success is driven by strong leadership, particularly under the guidance of Dr. Summia Zaher, the Chief Executive Officer of the hospital. Dr. Zaher has played a pivotal role in the development of Danat Al Emarat, particularly in the realm of maternal and reproductive healthcare. With over two decades of experience in Obstetrics and Gynecology, Dr. Zaher has worked tirelessly to elevate the quality of care and improve operational efficiency at the hospital. Her focus on integrating cutting-edge technology and ensuring high standards of patient care has played an integral role in the hospital’s growth and success.
Dr. Summia, you’ve had an impressive career in Obstetrics and Gynaecology. What inspired you to pursue this field in the first place?
Born in Manchester to a family of doctors, it was a matter of time before I was recruited into the family business. Despite having initial childhood interests of being a business owner and teacher, it was my father who is now a retired obstetrician and gynaecologist who told me, you can be a doctor and a teacher, but you cannot be a teacher and a doctor! With that, along with my twin sister, we ‘discovered’ Dundee, the city of discovery (East of Scotland) and became the youngest medical students in our cohort. I graduated with the Margaret Fairlie prize in Obstetrics & Gynaecology and a strong impression left by my undergraduate professor of O&G, who surely is to be credited for helping me on my path to a career in O&G and igniting my interest and passion for medical education. A strong believer in the power that a good teacher can have on the lifelong future of a young student, from very early on in my career, I took an interest in teaching junior colleagues and students.
Having served as both Medical Director and now CEO at Danat Al Emarat Hospital, how do you see leadership in healthcare evolving in the coming years?
As we enter 2025, leadership continues to evolve in response to a world that is dynamic, diverse, and increasingly interconnected. Here are five leadership trends I believe will define the year ahead:
- Empathetic Leadership: Empathy is no longer a ‘nice to have’-it’s a necessity. Leaders who prioritize understanding and supporting their teams will foster stronger engagement and collaboration.
- Data-Driven Decisions: In an era of rapid digital transformation, leveraging data insights will empower leaders to make more informed, strategic decisions that drive impact.
- Sustainability-Focused Strategy: Leadership in 2025 will require a commitment to sustainability-not just in environmental terms, but in creating lasting, meaningful outcomes for communities and organizations.
- Inclusive Leadership: Diverse teams are powerful teams. Inclusive leadership will ensure everyone has a voice, driving innovation and equity in the workplace.
- Future-Ready Skills: The pace of change demands continuous learning. Leaders will need to model curiosity and adaptability to inspire their teams to grow with the times.
The future of leadership isn’t about maintaining the status quo-it’s about leading with purpose, flexibility, and a commitment to positive change.

With your extensive experience in both clinical practice and medical leadership, what do you believe is the most important factor in providing high-quality care to women and children?
The most important factor in providing high-quality care to women and children is fostering a compassionate, patient-centered approach. It’s about seeing each woman and child as an individual, listening to their needs, and empowering them to be active participants in their own healthcare journey. At the heart of this is building trust—between the patient, their family, and the healthcare team.
Additionally, creating an environment where collaboration thrives, where clinical expertise is combined with empathy and a deep understanding of the unique challenges that women and children face, can lead to truly transformative care. It’s not just about treating illness; it’s about supporting the whole person—their emotional, psychological, and physical well-being.
When we approach healthcare with a holistic perspective and a focus on equity, we lay the foundation for not only healing, but for lasting positive impact in the lives of women and children.

Danat Al Emarat is part of the M42 group, which is known for integrating cutting-edge technologies. How do you see the role of innovation in healthcare shaping the future of maternal and reproductive care?
Innovation in healthcare is revolutionizing maternal and reproductive care, and the future holds immense promise. At the heart of this transformation is the integration of advanced technologies, which empower healthcare professionals to offer more personalized, efficient, and accurate care. From AI-driven diagnostics to telemedicine and wearable health monitors, these advancements ensure that women receive timely and tailored interventions, often before issues arise.
For Danat Al Emarat, being part of the M42 group means embracing a culture of continuous innovation, where technology enhances the patient experience and outcomes. In maternal and reproductive care, innovation fosters not only safer pregnancies and childbirth but also greater accessibility to high-quality care, no matter the patient’s location. By utilizing cutting-edge solutions, we can improve fertility treatments, prenatal monitoring, and post-natal care, creating a healthier future for mothers and children alike.
The future of healthcare is incredibly exciting, and with each technological breakthrough, we move closer to a world where every woman’s journey through motherhood is supported by the very best in medical innovation.
You have a strong background in medical education. How do you ensure that Danat Al Emarat remains at the forefront of training and developing future healthcare professionals?
My impact extends to the development of the UAE’s future medical leaders. I have championed the establishment of residency programs in obstetrics and pediatrics, providing Emirati healthcare providers with the skills and experience necessary to excel. These programs emphasize not only technical skills but also compassionate, patient-centered approaches that reflect my values. By investing in local talent, I’m building a sustainable healthcare system that will continue to grow and thrive long after my tenure, leaving a lasting legacy in the region’s medical community. In addition, my leadership in the hospital’s Research and Development Committee has led to significant contributions to women’s healthcare research, with Danat Al Emarat Hospital for Women & Children’s studies in obstetrics and gynecology recognized at global forums, including the prestigious Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists (RCOG) Congress, and published in leading medical journals.
We have developed links with a local university (Fatima college of health sciences) that is training future midwives, we have developed programs in which the students are able to come and train in a leading maternity hospital, shadowing and working with real midwives, who will inspire them and set them on their career paths.
Dr. Summia, with such a busy and demanding career, how do you manage to maintain a work-life balance?
Balancing a demanding career with personal life can be challenging, but I’ve found ways to integrate both aspects meaningfully. One of the strategies I use is involving my children in my work, especially when preparing my lectures. This allows me to share my professional life with them and foster a connection between my role as a mother and a medical leader.
Reflecting on a key moment in my career, I recall the difficult decision I made to return to work early from maternity leave. This meant missing out on some special family milestones, and it was a hard choice, but it was a decision I had to make at that time.
One of my most cherished memories is having my three-year-old son join me on stage as I received recognition from the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists (RCOG) President. It was a poignant moment that reflected the harmony between my professional achievements and the importance of my family life.
I strongly believe in empowering others by rejecting the idea that struggle is a necessary rite of passage. I advocate for flexible working arrangements and a positive work-life balance, because success does not have one definition, and it should never come at the expense of your health or family.
What aspect of your work gives you the most satisfaction, and why?
The aspect of my work that gives me the most satisfaction is the impact we have on individual patients’ lives. Receiving feedback from patients about their experiences and the impact our care has had is what truly motivates me to continue improving and delivering high-quality care. Nothing makes my day more than the casual drop by, of a staff member telling me that they love working at Danat, it reinforces the positive work environment we have built together. These moments remind me of the impact we have on people’s lives and keep me striving to reach even greater heights in everything we do.
What do you enjoy doing in your personal time?
In my personal time, I find immense joy in embracing the beauty of nature—whether it’s a peaceful walk in the woods or a moment of stillness by a quiet stream. I was lucky enough to live my life in the UK and be a member of the national trust ( a heritage and nature conservation organisation), which is blessed with areas of outstanding natural beauty and worked our way around the UK, visiting all of these areas. Having relocated to the UAE, I’m excited to be discovering the spectacular nature that it has to offer. Spending time with my husband and children is where my heart truly finds its home. Together, we cycle through life’s adventures, trying new things and exploring the world around us. Each new experience fills us with excitement for the future and gratitude for the blessings of the present. These moments of connection and discovery remind me that life is not just about the destination, but about savoring the journey together.
The hospital’s unwavering dedication to excellence, combined with Dr. Zaher’s leadership, ensures that Danat Al Emarat will remain a trusted healthcare provider, transforming lives and setting new standards for women’s and children’s healthcare for years to come.
