Google has announced the launch of Flow, a cutting-edge AI filmmaking tool aimed at transforming the creative process for storytellers. Tailored specifically for Google’s most powerful AI models like Veo, Imagen and Gemini, Flow is designed to help filmmakers and creatives bring their visions to life- from initial concept through to cinematic execution.
According to Google, Flow has been developed “by and for creatives” and enables users to produce cinematic scenes and clips with ease. The tool allows storytellers to freely experiment and iterate as they shape their narratives, unlocking new possibilities in digital filmmaking.
Flow is built around Veo, Google’s state-of-the-art generative video model, which stands out for its impressive ability to generate realistic video content that adheres accurately to prompts. Gemini models sit behind the interface to make interaction feel more natural, allowing users to describe their concepts in plain language.
With the integration of Imagen, Google’s text-to-image model, Flow users can either upload their own visual assets or generate new ones, including characters and environments. These assets can then be reused in various scenes for continuity and consistency, or even used as the foundation for new shots.
A suite of creative tools
Flow includes a range of features designed to support both newcomers and experienced filmmakers:
- Camera Controls: Offers fine-tuned control over camera movement, angles, and visual perspectives.
- Scenebuilder: Lets users expand existing shots or transition between scenes while keeping motion and character consistency intact.
- Asset Management: Provides simple tools to organise prompts and visual ingredients efficiently.
- Flow TV: A curated gallery showcasing clips made using Veo. It includes detailed prompts and techniques for each video, offering creators a practical way to learn and develop new styles.
Flow is the evolution of Google’s earlier project, VideoFX, which was launched under Google Labs last year. It is now available to US-based subscribers of the Google AI Pro and Google AI Ultra plans. Availability in other countries is expected in the near future.
Subscribers to Google AI Pro will receive key Flow features and 100 generations per month. Meanwhile, AI Ultra plan holders gain access to the highest usage limits and early access to Veo 3, which now includes native audio generation. This means creators can incorporate ambient sound and character dialogue directly into their videos.
Working with filmmakers
Google says it has collaborated closely with filmmakers during the development of Flow, aiming to understand how the tool can genuinely support their creative workflows. These insights have directly influenced the platform’s features and functionality.
Among the filmmakers who have worked with Flow so far is Dave Clark, a multi-award-winning director. Clark, who regularly integrates new technology into his productions, created his latest short film ‘Freelancers’ using Flow alongside other tools. The film tells the story of “two estranged adopted brothers on similar quests.”
Another member of the collaboration is Henry Daubrez, a creative who has spent the past 18 years experimenting with technology in his art. Junie Lau, a film director and multidisciplinary artist, is another early adopter.
Google acknowledges that AI is still in the early stages of redefining how films are made. However, the company believes tools like Flow could unlock new ways for creators to express themselves.
